shml12
Hi all, New to the sport and really looking for some ideas on what sort of gun i should be looking to buy and the PW forums seem full of good advice. Don't want to spend over £1k (Max!) and have been looking at the Lincoln Premier, Rizzini sideplated, Pointer 612 and the Betinsolli Diamond. Hoping for something that can be used as a real all rounder, clays, pigeons and maybe even a bit of rough shooting (if i'm lucky enough to find some permissions!). Any help will be greeatly appreciated. ATB Stuart
ShooterTom
Welcome For £1k You could just about get a new or nearly new Beretta, Browning, or miroku. Choose somthing that will fit. I was in then same situation as you about a year ago. I first bought a bettinsoli but had problems with it and ended up giving it back and getting a beretta silver pigeon which so far, touch wood has been faultless. Hope this helps Tom

My advice is to try before you buy. Some people get on better with Berettas rather than Brownings and vice versa, gun fit is important unless you are a fairly standard size then you should be ok with the usual 14.5" length of pull etc... Barrel length is personal choice, I prefer a 30" barrel some like the 28". Again, have a go with some different guns at a Clay Pigeon Club, they normally hold a good range for anyone to borrow. Dont worry too much about buying a "new" gun because it looks good and looks cheap like a Bettsy or Lincoln. I speak from experience, so good luck and enjoy.. Try: Beretta 686E / Silver Pigeon Sporting range / Onyx, really good guns And of course welcome to the forum Edited November 30, 2010 by dmason24
humperdingle
Don't overlook Lanbers - Apparently the Pointers are pretty similar in design.
kevinbird
be carefull if you go for a lincoln as they can be heavy dont know your build so just a warning and my opinion as i have one. i use it for clays only. the guns the other lads have said are ideal

Daveo26
S/H Beretta/Browning or Miroku which ever fits best. You might aswell buy one of the above in the first place because if not in a couple of years when you have tried lots of lesser guns you will probably end up buying one anyway Its what i did. HDAV
Bought a couple of year old Browning 525 multichoke 30" Cased for your budget. I tried a Browning and Beretta at the shops clay ground walked away with the Browning. From what i have seen and read for around £800 you can get a mint gun that will last a lifetime, just make sure it fits and fits well as a newcomer your gun mount will be variable mine still is a year on......find a good dealer who will let you try the gun "live" and allow you to return if you change your mind most give 7 days. retromlc
TBH,people change their guns a lot at the beginning,if you have mates with guns I'd see if you could use theirs for quite a while, shoot all their guns, and clay shoot regularly, get some lessons,at least one, after a while you will gravitate towards a certain brand and then barrel length, and type etc will start to fall into place, then after a period of time and I would honestly give it 6 months (most mates would let you use their guns for this long without worring, well I would) then you will know exactly which gun you like and what you want to use it for. E.g I started with a Browning 525 sporter, lost money when I bought a Beretta Silver Pigeon S game fixed choke which I liked, tried a Aya SxS,eventually i tried a semi auto.As I rarely shoot clays as I find it boring, apart from the social, and I now shoot 99% of the time decoying pigeons I only use semi's as they are what suits my shooting needs and I like the way they point etc. I have lost a lot of money on trade-in's.The temptation to rush out and own a gun usually results in a trade-in and more money being shelled out

As been said before i would be looking at a Browning/Beretta/Miroku for you price range and go for the one that fits you the best... demonwolf444
get something that fits really well, something you can manage and something that feels comfortable and it will last forever because you will love it, some guns feel like a third arm and some just feel like some random lump O lumber
