HoTsHoT-10
I am planning to purchase a air rifle too use as a farm gun. nothing fancy, just cheap and not C02. Will be used for pest controlling around the farm for when that quick rat shot arises. any ideas? budget of £60 don't mind condition as it is going to get bashed around as long as it can group at 30yd to drop pigeons. prefer .177 and full power. any suggestions or possible sellers? vole
I always am on the lookout for an old BSA Airsporter or Mercury .I guess these would be a better buy than the new Chinese made airguns . Just had a peep on Guntrader and Gunstar but they are a bit more than your budget . My RFD tends to have older BSA ,s knocking about though . I bought an old Meteor for £20 and he has done the Mercury recently for £ 80 . Edited December 11, 2010 by vole
HDAV
Keep an eye out for a good springer in .177 BSA (supersport/lightening/meteor) or Webley (vulcan,Hawk etc) older ones not the newer imports... Also check out army surplus type stores and secondhand shops as bargains can be had. You can try phoning a few local RFD's and look for forum classifieds post a wanted ad etc may well be someone with one locally stuck at the back of a cupboard... hoTshoT-16
smk air rifles are cheap and it doesnt matter so much about the damage inflicted in the yard also should be poweful enough round my farm for pest control

Albion
The Mercury is a proper 'old reliable'. Very light and handy

kent
Why .177? at 30yds there is no trajectory advantage over a .22 and the .22 is less likely to overpenitrate giving cleaner kills and less chance of putting holes in roofs culling ferals. Just a suggestion as in that budjet range you will find many more in .22 cal. not starting a calibre debate but your missing out 70% of available guns by saying .
pabs
Niether pellet will cause damage if it manages to pass throuth the target at 30 yrds. You might get a lead smear on a tin/ composite roof, but nowhere near enough energy to cause damage. Unless you go for head shots. That'll smush right through with little energy loss. When culling ferals i have taken shots at way less than 30yds Pabs in fact i recon on taking a fair few at as little as six feet!

hoTshoT-16
i will look out for a bsa meteor or a comet in bad condition which should be good for dropping pigeons and magpies no problem

Well yeah, no doubt. But the question was about 30yrds. At 10 yrds a pellet may do damage on exit.
The Duncan
If you're only ever shooting at 30 tards or less, I'd definitely get a .22 as it hits harder and should the pellet pass through the quarry, the hole will be bigger and consequently, the animal will bleed faster and pass out quicker. hoTshoT-16
.22 hits harder and for a farm gun your max range is 30yds anyway
