Take 1 cartridge and a good book

Excellent advice... I too am going out tomorrow and the place is steaming with them.

My mate went today and shot 2, for 2 shots.

Though not deterred by this as I fancy a day in the country to get away from the pies and booze.

So would you recommend Tolstoy or something by Wilbur Smith...

So Shotgunny, how did it go today, did you need that Book, was it sound advice?

Like I said, I went out today with ozzy518, didn't take the book though, silly me.

Plenty on the field, tooing and froing as we watched, so set up under what seemed to be a flight line.

The birds were everywhere, flocks of hundreds easily, milling up in that big spiral they do, then slowly spiraling down again, to alight on the Rape further up the field, or in the field over the road.

Ozzy stayed put while I walked over to the base of one of these spirals and sat in the hedge waiting for their return. I really could have used that book at this point. They didn't come back.

Well, with all our walking about following them, we ended up with 5.

Difficult time of year this, but don't stay home because of that, BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW.

Hi mate

when we got to the field there was roughly about 300 birds feeding.

Flightlines were quickly discovered and by the end of the day 10 birds were shot.

Were out again tommorrow for more so the book could be on the cards yet.

Good on you Shotgunny, get out amongst them, you wont shoot any sitting in front of that telly.

ozzy518 is out again tomorrow, the forecast being more favorable, with sunshine and a stiffer breeze predicted. I think because of this he will have a better day. I know where he is going, and there will also be ample birds there for him to look at, sorry, shoot.

Unfortunately, I am back at work from tomorrow.

So come back on here tomorrow night, this page, and tell us how you did. And good luck.

Well, I went out today to a rape field that I saw with Jim yesterday.Arrived at 10 am ,there was a blue bobbing mass in the middle and they were flighting to and from via an old ivy clad tree in the hedgeline. I set up to the side of the tree in the hedge and put up the hide.

I had 11 dead pigeons with me, 5 from yesterdays outing with Jim and the rest that he had donated to the cause. Two on the whirly and one on the flapper, the rest on cradles.

Within 5 minutes a pigeon came in. I missed. I also missed the following 5. It was time. I knew I had to do it. I had a serious word with myself. Next pigeon in came from left to right. My ever faithful Extrema 2 barked and a puff of feathers confirmed that 32g of number 6 had found its mark. The pigeon thudded to the ground dead. A couple of doubles followed, all meeting the same fate. It would appear that my admonishment had worked.

Just as things were looking good I noticed that the pigeon on the flapper was moving like an arthritic pensioner doing the Birdie song dance. The battery was going flat. I had forgotton to charge that one. Eventually it died completely. I left the pigeon on it and hoped that the whirly alone would do the job. A few more birds came in and all were downed bird for cartridge.

Then it happened.....I had seen it coming from afar.....I had hoped it would leave me alone, but alas, no. The grey fog blanket approached and soon was upon me and the decoys. Visibility was about 100m so I sat it out. The occasional bird came in and was dispatched. The fog eventually cleared but nothing more came in and I packed up at 2pm. It had been an hour since the last pigeon had come in.

Final tally was 15 pigeons. Not a huge bag but in the few hours before the fog came in I was happy.

Well done Ozzy and well done Shotgunny.

We have plenty of those danged Buzzards down here too, keep trying to slide off with our decoys.

Had one cheeky blighter, no matter how much we shouted and swore at it, still tried to rip a bird off a cradle. Had to chase it off in the end.

Poor thing you may think, but they do keep the Pigeons away, and the last thing we want is one sitting in a tree doing exactly that, waiting for a free feed because we gave it one last time.
