SilentKill
they can only say no!
Worstan
I was in a similar situation. I got my first FAC in March 2009. I was only allowed .17hmr (they wouldn't let me have a .22lr as well). I put in for a variation in Oct this year and asked for .22lr and .223. FAO rang me up and after a bit of discussion he added a .243 on as well! If you don't ask sometimes you do get!!
Paddy Galore!
if you have a genuine need then i can't see a problem, they could be pcky and ask you to have a mentor at first, would this be a problem? if not then maybe suggest it as a pre-emptive. Above all be reasonable and rational. Edited December 27, 2010 by GRAM71

Above all be reasonable and rational. one of the reasons i wanted to wait was because it would be a bit of a set back with a mentor but only for these reasons 1. the permission with the foxes the farmer will only allow me on and not take another, 2. my other permission is the farm i work for they have 1000 acre but its arable and its manly pigeon shooting they do have the odd fox but no real problem thats not to say i couldnt use it for a year or so to get use to it but there wouldnt be much to shoot at on it, colin

Paddy Galore!
hopefully not too long i believe iam a safe and competent shooter colin also... no reason why you can't get your "foxing ground" on the list for that particular caliber, just don't take your mentor on there, and you only need to practice on a few targets to get the hang of the rifle, safety you can do in a classroom, you already know the basics remember this is a worst case scenario, they might not mention supervision. al4x
how much ammo have you used with the rimfire? Make sure its a fair bit and apply. Beds are pretty sensible and if you can show the need and that you are responsible you should get it. Round here unless you are very young they don't seem to ask for mentors unless you are asking for deer to be added added
Colster
There's no time limit for a variation, if you can prove a need for a .308 as your first rifle then you should be granted it. I got my FAC about a year ago for .22LR and FAC Air. I put in my variation in June for .17HMR, .223 and .243 and had no problem getting it granted (with no need for mentoring). I'd put it in now before any price increases and other changes to licensing can come into play.
garyb
Put in for it now Providing you have good reason, it should just be a form filling job! It might help if you can get some time spent with someone who has a centrefire - this will look good when you are asked how much expierence you have with one.
