DRIVEN SHOOTING

I have been lucky enough to have been invited to some good driven shoots over the past 5 or 6 weeks.

At four out of five of them, I have amazed myself and the other guns by shooting a really high stonking pigeon in front of the line of guns - great news and great for the ego - but I have then let myself down by missing some very straightforward perfectly shootable pheasants.

Any one else suffer from the same problem and any ideas on how to put that right or else - if all else fails - some 100% cast iron & above all credible excuses for missing?

Thanks in advance guys

For me its working on getting footwork right so I am always square to the target, I often see people who lose it, leaning back or to the side at impossible angles like they are made of rubber

I have found that if I start the 1st drive well, I generally shoot the day well, if on the other I have a poor start I am way to hard on myself.

You kill some stunners, miss some sitters - but isnt that the case in all sports? if you didnt stuff some up you would be a pro shot :good:

Sorry Chaps - posted in the wrong section!

Thanks for all your tips - I am lucky enough to be shooting again tomorrow and will use the helpful shooting hints - if that does not work, I will dive into the excuses section!

Still cannot work out WHY I hit the pigeons. I think those grey ghosts are the hardest of things to hit and have nothing but admiration for those of you who go out decoying or roost shooting and come in with sack loads of birds .If I try that, it ends in tears - maybe I am just too old because my son is mega good at it??

As Tis1979 says, pheasants are moving much faster than they appear.Try speeding up your swing and taking the shot when you've completely blotted out the bird. The further away the bird, the faster the swing.

Failing that, stand with one hand shielding your face, this will fool the other guns into thinking the sun is in your eyes! Just enjoy yourself.
