ESS pup with the squits

We've had the pup for a few weeks now and she's growing well and EXTREMELY lively, only trouble is we can't get her tum sorted. She's been very squitty for some time now, tried feeding bland stuff like boiled chicken and rice, moistened, dried puppy food from well known manufacturers (Wellbelove and Pedigree) so at a bit of a loss now.

She's been wormed a couple of times and the vet has given her her first innoculation (none of this has made any difference).

Any ideas what to try ?

Rooster,

Plain boiled rice for a coupe of days, my little cocker had the same for a couple of days, the rice sorted him out OK, when ever either of my two (ess and the cocker) get a funny tum (not very often) they get rice

hope it clears soon, its very messy!

and make sure there is plenty of water for her

Rooster,

try starving her for 24 hrs and then re-introduce the dry food that you are going to stick with.

Remember, dogs do not require a varied diet as we do because their stomach is very delicate. Find a brand of food and stick with it.

If the dog don't eat it, pick it up. they will eat when hungry.

Feed at the same time each day and pick up after 30 mins.

Thanks for all the info guys.

This little devil gets 4 feeds a day and gulps the lot without pausing for breath !. Kept thinking it might have worms but its been wormed three times since we got it.

If the dog don't eat it, pick it up. they will eat when hungry. don't come into it !! you can pick up the bowl halfway through a feed but you'd need to count your fingers afterwards. Not because she is viscious just totally fixed on getting the food down.

At least she seems healthy otherwise and is growing well.

Old rooster:

Get a fecal exam done by the vet, and have him check her for coccidia...quite common in pups, and is fixed up with some meds.

NTTF

NTTF,

Had a look at some web pages describing the condition and it does sound as though she has many of the symptoms. Will get back to the vet and ask for the test to be done.

If it proves to be the correct diagnosis you'll be on for a few beers and a curry next time you are over here

Thanks again for the info.

Interesting site for anyone else interested in this and other conditions that could affect their dogs:

Yep, check for coccidia.

If she's just been on antibiotics these will also give her sloppy sheets, and she'll probably feel a bit grotty too.

Try plain boiled rice for 2/3 days, and if this doesn't work then you need to get back to the vets, as any lower GI tract problems, if not treated early can lead to longer lasting problems.

Probably a quick fix though, keep happy,

Tried the Bisto but it didn't like it, had to resort to OXO cubes in the end. :o :ernyha::D:D

Looking much better now, vet put her on a very bland diet for a few days with some tablets and its all cleared up nicely. Getting to be VERY lively now.

Thanks again for all the advice guys !!!!

Did the Vet say what it was Rooster?

NTTF

Yes he confirmed it definately was **** :o :ernyha:

Looks like it was the bacterial infection but he's said he will do some blood tests if she gets poorly again.

Seems fine now, been out walking today, taking her to the woods tomorrow.

Cheers,

Rooster
