It might be worth doing your own home study without the course, all you need is the correct reading material, that will probably set you back £30. The actual DSC1 3/4 day course is good value though as you still have to register and the admin to pay and thats usually included in the course. I did my DSC1 by using the British Deer Societies 'Training manual for deer stalkers 2009'. It has all the questions in it that you will be asked and you will find the answers as you read through the book. Other areas ie identification of the 6 deer species in winter and summer pelage can be found on the internet, also quite a few on here have done it and if you get stuck we can help you out.

Have you done both?

No

but did the BDS one at Fordingbridge, never met so many self opinionated cocks who gave the course, I have since, and it was many years ago, been involved in the BASC course through my stalking and think it is much better, my opinion of the BDS has been so altered that I am no longer a member, most of the stalkers I know feel the same but that is by no means all.

which ever course you decide to do it is worth doing

I was just curious, I did mine with the BDS in 2002 or 3 can't remember now, I was a member at the time, but like you wasn't fussed about some of the members.

The lecturers were varied and ranged from excellent (almost certainly one of the ones you are referring to, I know what you mean but he is a very good stalker, my mate was out with him this morning) to a complete and utter wannabe.

I studied from the BDS deer stalking manual and did the BASC course, they are exactly the same. This was held by a chap by the name of Patrick Falkner near Ludlow, the people on the course found it great from what I can gather. I joined them on the last day for the exam and everyone was very helpful with plenty of free coffee in the old farm kitchen.

The more you study the easier it is, and like I said before, if you need help this forum is the place. One part of the course a few became unstuck was on the shooting test, its pretty easy but there is a bit of pressure as your doing it in front of the rest of the group. My advice is to get plenty of practice first, I didnt have a 243 to practice with but had managed to have a few shots on a RFD friends range, I also had plenty of practice with my hmr. Its not a phd in physics and the instructors are out there to help you, you will learn some interesting things about Deer and guns and you will come away with the large game meat hygiene qualification that will allow you to legally sell venison to the game dealer.
