Frenchieboy
I am wanting to get a slightly better knife than the cheap ones I have ready for and Gralloching/Skinning of Deer once I start Stalking. I currently use an Opinel for gutting and skinning rabbits etc, and I am delighted with the way this cheap little knife holds a fantastically sharp edge but I fully realise that this would not be a very practical knife for deer stalking. I also have a couple of sheath knives that do hold a pretty good edge but I would doubt if they were anywhere near good enough for use while deer stalking. I am on a pretty tight budget so I can not afford to go out and spend £100 plus for one of the "top of the range hunting knives" which might not get much use anyway so I was thinking of a Mora Clipper Carbon Steel knife as a starter like the one in this link - http://www.militarymart.co.uk/Mora-Knife-Clipper-840MG-Carbon-Steel/prod_797.html I realise that (To a certain extent) "You get what you pay for" and that these are dirt cheap compared with some but does anyone use one and if so what do they think of them - Would one of these be suitable as a "Starter Knife" until I could afford to go for something like this http://www.ronniesunshines.com/finnish-double-combo-pukko-knives-p-1333.html Any thoughts please? Chris Bb
These knives represent amazing value for money. Go for it.
Dougy
Aye up Frenchie, i think £9.99 is a bit on the deer side, i got 2 Mora Stainless Steel for £13.50 at my local "springfields" store. Carbon steel is good but the down side is they will rust very easy, hence me getting the SS. camokid
i use one pete its the wooden one little bit more money think £20 but it holds the edge and works well. just watch the blade they have no guard
Salop Matt
Mora`s are great knives but for me a bit to big for rabbits ! Personal choice though !
cleaner4hire
opinel for rabbits, Mora (stainless for food hygiene purposes) for deer - not expensive and excellent. Cant go wrong really!!
Frenchieboy
Ok, so it seems that they are good value for money but some are saying that the Stainless Steel are better than the Carbon Steel. If this is right (And I am not questioning it either way) could someone please explain why? There has also been a point/concern raised about them not having a "guard", with that in mind might it be a better idea to get one of these Mora Blades: http://www.ronniesunshines.com/mora-scandvik-12c27-knife-blank-p-1431.html and create a custom knife yourself? (The issue that I see here is getting or making a secure and safe sheath for it)
Beardo
superb knives - my main all round knife
Beardo
Stainless is great from a hygiene point of view as it doesn't rust, but it doesn't take an edge as well as Carbon.
sitsinhedges
Like the knife but would always go with stainless. Carbon is too much of a pain to keep clean or free from black rust marks. Corrosion does nothing for a knife's sharpness, BTW.
camokid
the blade looks nice and you can get camo cord and make a really cheap but looks good handle. i have enought to do a handel for ya
Loki
Wotcha Having previously used a Carl Schleiper I have been using both a carbon steel and a stainless version of these knives for several years now. In my experience, yes the carbon steel one does show discolouration, however, using a Lansky kit the carbon steel sharpens up quicker than the stainless. Whilst as suggested by others the stainless may well hold its edge better but havent noted/tested this..... If left/lost somewhere these wont hurt as much as a more esoteric brand/knife. Cheers
HEAD SHOT NO1
Stainless is great from a hygiene point of view as it doesn't rust, but it doesn't take an edge as well as Carbon. I'll 2nd that. May be one of each?
Frenchieboy
Thanks for all of the advice guys, I appreciate it. I have made the decision and bought one of these for now: http://www.springfields.co.uk/knives-multitools/knives/survival/?id=5658 It is cheap enough to get me going till I can afford a much better one then I could happily give this one away to someone else who is starting out. mick miller
I'll tell you how good a Mora is. Mors Kochanski (the original bushcrafter - way before Mears) uses one extensively to the exclusion of all other knives. He's hammered one into a tree trunk, stood on the handle and jumped up and down and the Mora handled it just fine. You can split wood with a Mora by hammering the handle, they take and hold an edge well. Why would you buy owt else? Great knives, great value. Get an orange one (so you'll never lose it).
