henry d
Early doors again at the geese with my mate and it was fully light before they started to move, as the mood is waning. First to drop in was a pair and only I got a shot and dropped a single. Next lot came in about 3-400 strong and my mate has a shot at them, I heard an odd bang, but as I was near a burn and had my electronic ears on I didn`t realise he had a mis-fire ! I carried on calling as there were another 500 + coming in and in the ensuing chaos, I shot first one and then another a few minutes later and I was surprised my mate hadn`t fired, so I look towards him and he is looking down his barrels !!!!!!! As the geese were offski, I ran over to him and he told me what happened, first barrel was a pop, the second was a bang and he says he got "sparks" in his eyes. Lookinh down the barrel and there is just blackness, blowing only gets wind back in my face, so there is a blockage. The barrels are not bulged and we are in one piece, however the geese are intent to get in this field so we decide to get away and leave them in piece. If it wasn`t for the first going "pop" he may not have noticed the second had also stuck and if he had put another cartridge in behind it........... Anyway, a pic of the little tyke and a BIG greylag and the offending wads, you can see where the unburnt powder was pushed past the wad ! pavman
seen this before with damp carts, some of the powder sets off enough to move the wad up the barrel but no grunt...... i had to push one out my sons auto one time with a cleaning rod but i looked from safe end and only after a good period of time. Turns out his water bottle had a leak into his game bag and he did not thnk the carts would be effected.
henry d
is that the Postie's random pocket selection? send him my regards and glad he wasn't hurt! Yup, will do seen this before with damp carts, some of the powder sets off enough to move the wad up the barrel but no grunt...... Very possibly as a few of the heads were rusted and they are just used for geese inland so only see light of day a couple of days a year and usually in bad weather. Teal
Very fortunate escape there hd, I note your comment about the greylag size, I got my first greylags a couple of weeks ago in the small Isles off the west of Scotland, and was told that old geese are very tough but that the youngsters are delicious but to be safe they should probably be casseroled. My question is that some of the greylags were larger than others once dressed out, is size to do with male/female or is it an indication of age, or is there some other explanation? I presume that it is male/female, as the wee one I shot last week was recognisable as a youngster as the feather edges were rough and the general look was like a young animal, just like when stalking you can tell an older beast by its general look. Conversely last year I shot a small grey and it looked haggard and that was made into jerky. > Next lot came in about 3-400 strong Oh aye, I've heard that before, that's one of your decoys Annas' got isn't it? She`d even struggle with one of them ! Maybe I should use the sillosocks > first barrel was a pop, the second was a bang and he says he got "sparks" in his eyes.
