Whitebridges
It’s about time all this metric **** was finished. Why do we have to suffer? There is no point in using foreign and Inperial measures in tandem. Imperial measures remain the correct standard. This is what I mean. In the UK we measure road distances in Miles. We even get nicked doing “x” miles and hour. (Imperial) Shotgun bores are conversions of ounces of lead through a bore (Imperial). We drink pints and gills in a pub. (Imperial). Depth under a boat is still in fathoms. (Imperial). We bet on horses that run over furlongs. (Imperial) I still buy sausages and meet in pounds and oz. (Imperial) Fishing rods are sold in feet and inches.(Imperial) Fishing line shows it breaking strain in pounds.(Imperial) Fish are sold at market in Stones.(Imperial). There is no reason to continue entertaining metric measurements. I would dump any reference to metric in the UK and would like to know your opinions.Virtually on a daily basis it frustrates the hell out of me. Although our cousins in the US of A have a few bigger issues , I admire there resolve in largely keeping the metric **** out of their country. Have I got this wrong? Interested in your views. Thanks boys.

Gungadin
You think metrics bad ? Be very proud to be British Because: Only in Britain... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance. Only in Britain... do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. Only in Britain... do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a DIET coke. Only in Britain... do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters. Only in Britain... do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage. Only in Britain... do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place. Only in Britain... are there disabled parking places in front of a skating rink.

I accept the points you make and it makes me howl and spit. Have you got any views on my thread. If you have fantastic, if you haven't then hopefully you are busy writing to your MP, and getting off your **** sir. Axe
I was taught in metric and use Imperial for my understanding of most things. The only I time I choose imperial is for technical drawings and of course counting my coppers. The later of which im glad for as no matter how many times the old man explained pounds shilling and pence, I could never grasp it. So you have my support. :o Oh and by the way.....5lb 15oz. MC
I am the other way round, I learnt at school in metric, when I did my apprentiship I was taught in imperial. I now work in metric. I still find it easier to visualise 8foot rather than 2440mm. I agree thought we should use one or the other Cheers MC
SNAKEBITE
Like you Martin i was taught in Metric at school (being a '71 vintage!) but learnt imperial in my apprenticeship. I can quite easily jump between thous' and microns! Infact the most confusing thing I find is the Imperial fractions, converting 23/64ths for instance into decimal or Metric! What's wrong with knowing both though? It's like speaking two languages and best of all it confuses the hell out of johnny forgiener! Almost as fun as watching them work out rhyming slang! Gungadin
I was taught in Imperial and do a lot of DIY and find its easier to measure in metric, regarding writing to my MP,do you think it would make a blind bit of a difference, its not the MPs in London that run this country, its the EU and they are METRIC Didn't one million people march to London on the hunting foxes subject. Tony Blair and his cronies don't want to listen to you or me. (Just watch the ID bill). However much I agree or disagree with your argument theres not a lot we can do about it,(if you know different please enlighten me). Must go and weigh myself reckon it will be around 14 stone.******** if I know what that is in KGs
SNAKEBITE
If everyone voiced their opinion then yes it might make a difference. But we don't, so it won't. To be honest when compared to hospitals, schools and other such matters the metric system comes way down the list on things I worry about. Still makes for a good thread though! :o
Country_est
Yes can I have a sheet of 8x4 12mm ply please :o Want some pipe 15mm od 1/2" ID measurements can be 37" + 4mm whan Iam doing DIY. will jump and mix and match as suits. But think we should have stuck with IMPERIAL. Trev
