I am thinking of getting a lurcher or two in the near future and would like know if ye could advise me on the best lurcher book available on the market that would give a beginner like me all the information i need to know about the breeds and crosses and training them from a pup as i would like to do a bit of homework on lurchers before i get one.

The main quarry i would be hunting would be rabbit and foxes.

I had a lurcher before when i was young but he never recieved any training and would like to do things right this time round

Cheers all

Thanks for the offer LB but by the time i paid for shipping the book to me and shipping it back to u it probably would be cheaper to buy a new book or books

I am just looking for a book that will give me a no b******t basic knowledge of the sport from chosing a dog to training a pup.

I have the services of a track greyhound that has won over €75,000 in his racing career and i have seen this dog take a fox my mistake while being galloped one day while only 20 months old and numerous hares and rabbits so i know he is keen to hunt when left and have also been offered a collie bitch who we use to net hares with and it is very good at what she does so was thinking of mating the two to start of with and keeping two bitch pups from the litter and go from there so if u could recomend just one book to me that u would think that would be usefull to me i would be gratefull :sly:

Hi John, the links below might help a bit. You can order them from tideline books, their very good.

The books are full of info and will tell you everything you want to know.

John, the offer still stands. I can post them free of charge and will be in Cork later this year so could collect them. However, as you have a good dog and bitch lined up I dont think you will need any book to help you. As others have said it will just confuse the situation.

If I was you John,I'd get the Tideline catalogue ,then go to the library, and ask them for which ever book you fancy reading,

In lincs if you know the title and author of a book, as long as the book is in the lincs library system, they will get it for you,

this can save you a lot of money,

if however you like reading and like to own books ,Tideline providea first class service(i've spent hundreds with them in the past and can't fault them)

I would also advise you to read as many books as you can,but don't take every thing you read as sound,

pick out the bits that make sense, and use them, and disreguard the bits that you dont see the sense in,

I would'nt just limit myself to lurcher books either, some good info can be had from gundog books, and they tend to be written by people who realy know there stuff (unlike some lurcher books)

when it comes to books by plummer,I have read most and they are very entertaining, but I think contain as much or more fiction than fact!

and do'nt forget you can always ask any questions on here ,there are plenty of dogmen willing to try and help,

Good luck with your litter of pups,I wish you well with them,

the only thing I would say is think about weather you will have the time to train Two pups at once,

I've had a few pups myself, but I would'nt like to try Two at once,

All the best Mick.

Thanks for all the advice lads. :):lol:

It makes sense to only keep one pup from the litter especially when i am a complete novice so thats what i will be doing.Going to see can i get a few books through my library and filter out the fact from fiction in them to see can i build up a basic knowledge about lurchers so when the time or a problem arises i will know what to do or where to turn for help. The collie bitch that i am considering on using as just come out of heat and she breaks every 6 months so i have that long to find out what i need to know before making my mind up wether to go ahead with breeding or not.

Cheers again lads for the help :P :( ???

if its a half cross collie grey.they should be a doddle to train as long as you have the basic training the hunting will come naturaly to the dog.and by the sounds of it if you put them to dogs together the pups should turn out fine.
