"If you want me to substantiate...."-Yep-waiting here bright eyed and bushy tailed.I,m dying to hear the wealth of knowledge that you have gained since joining this site 2 days ago and admitting to having limited experience with a spring powered airgun and a .22 rimmie.Excuse my sledgehammer manner but your initial statement was so blinkered.

I didn't mean to offend you mate. Now I may have limited experience in the field - I live in south-east London, the opportunity for hunting seldom arises. But I have friends who hunt, and have read into the subject of both external and terminal ballistics in great detail, as it is of personal interest to me. Moreover the length of time for which I have been a member of your forum is in no way indicative of the amount of time I've been interested in your sport, nor the amount or validity of the information I may have garnered during it...

Sorry, :drinks:

No offence taken whatsoever. But my point is simply-you need experience before you can hope to give an opinion on any matter.Reading books is great but it does,nt give you the same knowledge as standing under a tree for hours trying to drop pigeons as they swing in the upper branches or crawling thru wet grass for half an hour trying to pop that nervous rabbit.I have friends who compete in the Lombard Rally and talk for hours on end about it but that does,nt make me a good driver nor does it put me in a position to give an opinion on which engine is best (I can tell you which engine "they" think is)As for swotting up on terminal balistics again very impressive stuff and i,m glad that you are dedicated to such an extent but read this one line penned by your truly "If an airgun is as close to the legal limit as possible then a .22 is just as deadly in the field as its smaller cousin".Now i,ve been shooting for over 35 years(feel free to yawn) and been an instructor on airguns for quite a few and have hopefully picked up a couple of clues along the way.Ever been in a barn full of rats?-i have more times than i care to remember and if i could lay my hands on a .50 calibre airgun then i would have used it.There are many occasions where the larger calibre is desirable and this is the point i,m so determined to make.To sweep it under the table with such a bold statement as your initial post is daft at best.Next time i get a call regarding rat infestation i,ll give you a call ,and a 4.5 rifle ,then sit outside the foodshed and listen to you change your mind about the .22. :good::yes:

No that's very true. I would love to take you up on your offer some time. The opportunity for that kind of thing so rarely presents itself, that I'm happy to shoot just about anything! :drinks: (Unfortunately I don't drive, there is one potential permission within a reasonable distance, but it's been bombarded with eager air-gunners and consequently there's a massive waiting list...) :/

Pigeon popper-when you get time have a look at trains to MK.If its less than a kings ransom then might be able to arrange some roost shooting/rabbit stalking for you when the weather improves (shotgun/.22lr)-waiting at the moment for news of a local rabbit problem-if this comes up there could be some airgun work as well.

I've never traveled that far by train before, but if I can find an affordable off-peak I may well take you up on your offer there mate. :friends:

Thanks for all the replies! They have all been really helpful!

I will just get a bottle with my set up! By the sounds of it they seem to last you ages. What I hadn't considered into my set up was what scope,(can of worms I know)? I know to budject for the scope first as there is no point in cheap optics. So what would you recommend? Are the MTC scopes good? Should I get a mil dot to help with drop?

How accurate is the HW100? And to what range? Is the Air arms any less accurate or more problematic? I assume it is cheaper for a reason...?

I want bother going FAC as my .22lr will do fine for further out :good:

The aa 410 .177 is really accurate and over silly range,i have had two with no problems other than the bluing must be kept dry and oiled after use as with all guns,if you buy a new one then the bolt will be stiff till it gets run in and you learn correct technique,it would have to be some gun to beat the aa 410,but i have never used hw 100 so i dont know personally, but have only heard good things about both guns, all pcp rifles are accurate.

I'd like to see a 12ftlb .50 air rifle in action.

I had a go with a .25 on rats in a barn - short range and for an airgun, a very decent amount of 'whack' at POI! Sounds slightly sick, but it's a good sound.

Horses for course really and I'd only really use .25 for pretty close range stuff because of the lobbed trajectory (espesh in 12fpe), but now someone will come on and tell me they can nail a woodie at 60 yards with one :P

I find that between my legal limit HW100 (I'll never tire of saying how stunningly accurate it is) and my rimmie, there is no time when I need 'something in between'. In perfect still conditions and when I'm on form, I'll hunt out to 45 yards with the HW100, have on very very rare occasions nailed a bunny at 50 yards off the pod, but less than a handful in years - at that range the rimmie really is the tool. Bare in mind though, that I've had a vast amount of practise and shot FT and HFT for many years.

Scopes? I find mil dots are a benefit as is an illuminated reticle for dawn/dusk shooting, it is a definite help.

I wouldn't go stupidly cheap with a scope, nor would I blow more than £150 either. Anything reputable (3-9 x 40 or 4-16 x 44) seem about right for your stated needs.

Cheers

Duncan

If you're getting a Hawke scope make sure you have a valid warranty as I've have a real stinker that wouldn't hold zero.

I have friends that swear by them so I must have been unlucky but just a heads-up.

Thanks! I have one which I'm taking off my .223,(it seemed to hold zero on that ok so an airgun should be fine). However I would mainly be using it because I had it. I assume that it would be staying on 6X 99% of the time :hmm:

Or would this be better on a .22lr and something better for a airgun?

I was also wondering whether the Air Arms 410 rage come with a QD stud for a bipod? As I am sure some of the ones I was looking at didn't? I would definately be looking at the HW100 in that case!

Cheers :good:

Unless they've changed something recently, HW100's don't come with a QD stud either. I mounted one on mine with a top-hat bush inserted through the top of the stock, although I believe someone somewhere makes the front stock bolt with an eyelet in these days for the QD arrangement.

aha, they do :
