i shoot bothe left and right handed..depending on where i am shooting, sometimes laid in a creek facing a flightline it is easier to shoot left handed, sometimes right.

majority of time i shoot right handed but do well with left

i use right hand for writing but left hand for sawing and hammering

i started off a lefty but at primary school we were told to write 'properly' using our right hands, my handwriting is **** but it has had its benefits

ambidextrous footwise aswell, was always a good tactic catching out the defenders when playing footy for school

Hi, I am just starting to shoot off my left shoulder, I am right handed with everything I do, left footed when I played football, but can use my left hand pretty well.

I am pretty central with dominant eye (no I do not have 3 eyes with one in the centre of my forehead).

Todays attempt at left handed was pretty poor, I hit about 50% of the targets and the mount was a nightmare,I never felt comfortable at all, a change of gun and try again next week.

I am determined to master it just for something to do, but it is easier than I thought it would be, I am shooting gun down not gun up, the handest part is breaking the gun and catching the empties, I look a complete pr$tt, it is easier with a semi auto, as these are generally pretty straight guns, whereas my no.1 gun has a severe off cast and would be hopeless off the left shoulder.

I'm Rh but shoot lefthanded due to eye dominance to do it just spend a 10 minutes a day (every day) practising mounting the the gun to your left shoulder do this for at least 2 weeks before considering taking a shot! IT feels awful at first but that soon goes away.

I agree, in fact I should do it myself

do it occasionally on clays when I get peed off missing on a certain stand for a giggle, have to make sure I close my right eye as I am very right eye dominant and shoot gun up as mount feels weird but do seem to hit off left shoulder after I miss off the right  probably concentrating more on controling the gun and less on the clay.

I also got told to write with my "proper" hand at school and also have handwriting like a drunk spider thats been in the ink pot  as HDAV says practise it and you will soon build up some muscle memory, get down the clay ground and give it a go. whats the worst that can happen? you look a bit of a charlie and miss a lot, happens to me regularly

The hardest part you will find is your eyes. You will probably have to shut your dominant eye which you have become accustomed to using. You will feel like a beginner again. On the APSI(shooting instructors) course they get instructors to do it so they feel like a beginner again and can appreciate more the start of learning the art..when teaching others,it is a very good lesson.

You will have to re learn the 'gaps' if you shoot maintained lead and indeed your swing speed will be different.Ironically you may well find your swing is smoother though!

Go and shoot some clays and start to build the mount feel...you will be worse initially but I think you will be surprised that it is not actually too bad.I shoot sitting down in a hide and often shoot off both shoulders, the main problem is the mount and initially you will not mount the gun consistently. If you are a reasonable shot now you still will be but it will take a few months.

Practise as always is the answer, enjoy!

I had to do this when I started shooting over 25 yrs ago, but it soon becomes very natural. I do virtually everything right handed bar shoot, but it now just feels right to do this and most of my guns have the required amount of cast-on. I can however still use a neutrally cast stock without too much issue. My advice is jump in and practice - you will soon take to it. perhaps consider a shooting lesson to ensure you start out on the right track?

  • 2 months later...

This is an interesting topic

I am very right handed - if I try to write left handed even I can't read it!

However, only last week I found out that I can shoot a rifle left handed.

My left arm was getting tired and shaky punching paper so I tried mounting the gun left handed and was surprised that I was actually quite good!

I think it's because my right arm is stronger I can hold the rifle steadier and I don't really have any eye dominance to speak of.

What this really means though is that I need to practice mounting the rifle every day to build up more strength in my left arm.

However - I havent tried shotgun left handed yet and can't picture myself being any good!

Its probaby the same as how people hold a knife and fork - I'm forkbidextrous :)
