Sprinter
Just been out this afternoon to build a hide ready for a session on some rape tomorrow, I like to be able to sling the deeks out and settle in quickly. Before i had managed that though i had to put out a moderatly sized camp fire in the wood behind that the kids had lit. Anyway built the hide then gave the farmer a quick ring to advise location for tomorrow and tell him about the fire. Anyway to cut a long story short "you don't want to be doing that tomorrow boyo, i drilled a field of beans on Saturday........" So had a quick reccie, got there about 4:30pm and saw 20 odd feeding there. So it looks like my hide building session on the rape may have been a waste of time although if i hadn't have gone there i wouldn't have found out about the beans

Dustem Dave
Had some of my best ever bags on bean drillings,i looked at a field couple years back only had 6 birds feeding on it set up and shot 186,had lots of bags between 100 and 200 though modern drills don't leave as much spillage,i used to let the birds build up for a day or two but now prob best get at them soon as! Good luck let us know how you get on
Catamong
I've never seen pigeons feeding on newly drilled beans on my shoot. Well, they certainly love 'em in this part of the World. Cat
Sprinter
Good luck let us know how you get on Sure will, decoys are out the freezer. Carts are ready by the door. Think i'm gonna try and hit them with the full whammy, rotary, bouncers, half a dozen dead birds, 20 shells, 16 full body. If they think they're gonna feed on a nearby field that isn't ours i already have a dog walker primed with a banger rope for the hedge :yp:
UKPoacher
Strange! Last year for example the drill spilled loads of beans on the surface and not a single pigeon bothered them while I was watching. Not the rooks either. There were beans laid on the surface for weeks. When they matured we got a few dropping in and loads of magpies too, but the beans became diseased and had to be ploughed in. This year we have two fields that are just sprouting and have never been touched. Maybe a different species?
Sprinter
Didn't go quite to plan, was beaten to it by another shooter. Reverted to plan b on the rape and got a bit cold shooting 4.

Seamus
Last year the fields behind my house were drilled with beans and there were hundreds of pigeons on them. I watched two guys shooting over them on one occasion and they seemed to be doing well. I don't have permission on the land as permissions are already granted, spent many a day watching flocks of them tuck in... Frustrating stuff.. Sprinter
Thats a ****** mate shot 43 on drilling today but the fog was a pain ,had some peas drilled today so might get some shooting on them at weekend Not as bad as it seems, also found out that 2 fields of rape that haven't taken are being ripped up next week and beans put in there. These two fields are in what we call pigeon alley where a few flightlines seem to converge for some reason.

yickdaz
unfortunatley one farmer that used to put beans in every year for cattle feed has retired and its very sad because we used to plan our shooting months, before they went in,the best shooting was about a week after they were sown or broadcast;then you would get 3 goes on the same field still might have a field with beans to go at but farmer is undecided at the min Edited March 17, 2011 by yickdaz
UKPoacher
Well, that means they've found 'em, tomorrow they'll be 400. Cat They don't breed that fast No, they were just strags. The main flocks are on clover in horse & deer pastures where I can't get to 'em
