Dekers
This may sound strange but I'm curious what you think..... What component parts does a gun need to expel a single shot (BULLET, not pellet or shotgun cartridge, etc)) at very close range in a specific direction. Rifle/pistol/semi/auto/revolver, whatever, but MINIMUM component parts needed to fire 1 shot only and the firer to remain uninjured? Example, stock, slide, barrel, firing pin, handle, sight, spring, breach, magazine, trigger, etc, etc, etc. List ONLY 3 parts, starting with absolutely essential, then down in order of importance. If you would care to add your reasoning, I would also be very interested (not essential). Cheers Edited March 20, 2011 by Dekers
gixer1
Barrel breach and firing pin, as the breach and barrel direct the pressure exerted when the round is fired...and the pin sets the explosive train off... FalconFN
Barrel (anything that holds the case securely and allows the bullet to leave) Manually engaged firing pin. Spring (for firing pin). Anything else would be for safety, convinience and ease of use.

MartB
To take your question literally, to fire a 'bullet', you would need a propellent of some sort, which could be explosive through to a sling. You mention the need to be close to the target, from which I am going to assume under 3 metres. That rules out a range of options. A round bullet (Lead/steel ball) from a catapult would fit your purpose at that range on a number of target types. If you are intending, in this hypothetical question, to use a modern, unmodified, cased bullet, then the old schoolboy game of using hammer and pin method will usually work, but there is always the chance of a split case resulting in injury to yourself, not to mention anyone else in range. So not recommended. The Mau Mau in Kenya were very inventive in this respect and made use of a variety of items that could be found around the streets, in the home or workshop. So, without being too specific: Tube, pointed item, spring. Not to be tried lightly and definitely one of those life choices that will soon see the user reaching for the lost soap in the prison baths. Personally, I recommend the catapult! But buy a decent one. I still can't hit a barn door at more than 3 metres with my cheapy.

HDAV
well a mortar is a pipe sealed at one end with a fixed firing pin (tube assembly) nothing else needed "gun" wise just an appropriate round.
