yup he only used one out if curosity, you wouldn't use that sort of thing anyway,it kinda makes me laugh, people and recycling with semis, with their O/U they say mainly use 28 grms for clays and 32-30 for pigeon, then complain that they don't recycle 21 grm carts, something they'd never use!if you use a cart that is within the recommendations and clean your gun it should have no more issues than with a O/U.

My two pennath;

I love Beretta's - I have owned 4 so I am biased towards them, however I bought a Browning Maxus. Why?

The Maxus was a lot cheaper - I wanted something for shooting clays and pigeons so price was a big factor

The principle that the Maxus is built around is making it reliable - not quick, not light, not green but reliable, which has got to be the most important factor in a semi.

It came up really nicely when I tried one - the X400 seemed a lot heavier and sluggish

I love the speed load facility, which is brilliant in a hide

Browning are a big established name who can provide support if it goes wrong

Since buying it I really can't fault it. Easy to clean and as long as you don't put small load 65mm carts through it, it won't jam. A mate of mine bought one recently as he liked mine so much, as a replacement for his Escort, and cannot believe how much less recoil he feels.

Trust this helps

if I had to own one a 391 would be for me.

I looked that them, TBH I'm 70% sure I want the Xplor A400 and 30% for the Urika2 391. I like the synthetic finish more than the wood too. But the A400 just feels really comfortable.

As for the Maxus it's what I went into to look at originally :) but when I got my hands on it I wasn't as happy, plus I don't think reliability is as much a key factor for me since I'm not a serious shooter.

It's funny if you follow the threads I've posted you could probably see me going around in circles with this decision. I think when I go to buy gun I'll ending coming home with a new washing machine and wondering *** happened.

So the Maxus has less recoil than the A400 in your opinion?

It way me who wrote about the Hushpower Subsonics, as has been written I was only curious.

My a400 is the Unico model, with 3.5" chamber, so the a400 Light might be OK with those cartridges.

Any normal cartridge cycles fine and the kickoff system works well. I tried some Express Supreme Game 2.5" 34g cartridges, which claim 1450fps and are a bit lively in my little sidelock, and although they're still damned noisy the recoil felt was much reduced. 3" 50g Max Game are a bit lively too and you get a bit of muzzle climb if you try to squeeze a couple off quickly ( which you just have to try  ).

The manual says it can handle 2.75" - 3.5", but as said mine works with 2.5" too.

I haven't owned a Maxus, so can't comment on it, but I am well pleased with the Beretta.

EDIT: I just saw on the box that the Supreme Games are 1400fps, not 1450.

I've had my a400 for a few weeks now, fired 50g no2's through it, barely felt worse than putting 28gram loads through my Ultralight O/U and mine doesn't even have kickoff!

Light, incredibly reliable - cycled 21g no issues first time i used it. You absolutely cannot go wrong.

just buy it m8,you won't regret it.I wanted to buy a Maxus because it was cheaper, but after an hour mucking about in the shop I walked out with an A400,at the end of the day you can buy what you need, but you have to pay for what you want.As for quality Beretta IMO is better than the Maxus.

Never actually shot an A400 so couldn't tell you, sorry but unless you have got some serious neck/back problems or plan on shooting a lot of very heavy loads I can't see either being a problem. Needless to say the A400 with the built in kick off will absorb more then the Maxus which does not come with one as standard. As a game shooter I shoot a lot of 32g loads through an over and under so recoil on the Maxus is almost unnoticeable.

Suggest you find a gunshop which stocks both and see if you can take them both to a local clay shoot and try them out.

cheers,

I bought my A400 light with the kick-off in November and put 50x 32g carts through it while I was there, instant ear to ear grin :good: I felt like a dog with 2 *****.Since then Iv'e put about 1000 28g through it without any issues. With thenewe self cleaning system Beretta are using, cleaning is not much longer than my o/u.I shoot DTL,skeet and sporting with it never any problems. The only negetive thing I would say,is it only comes with cyl,1/2,and full chokes,Iv'e added a 1/4 Briley spectrum and a Gemini ported skeet.Buy it,you will love it and never regret it.

ps I went to look at a urika 2 also, and came home with the A400

I paid £1150 for mine with kick-off here.......

I'd be happy to get one for that, shame the place you linked to is so far away :( (I'm in south wales)

Is there much variation in price between retails? Should I be haggling with the guy? Because I'm not much of a haggler.

If you buy used keep your eyes open for extra chokes as a bonus, they're not cheap and you'll probably want at least a 1/4. I paid £950 for a mint used Unico with two extra extended chokes and kickoff3. I'm in the South East rip-off zone though, so you will probably find cheaper elsewhere.

The Unico was listed at £1400 new down here, just a few weeks ago, when up North is was going for £1250 .

I didn't think it was likely what I'm after would come up very soon, so at the moment I'm looking at new. But if I get a second gun chances are it would be used so I'll bare those tips in mind.

Also even though I live in Wales I'm currently working in Northampton so any retails selling guns between those two points would be somewhere I could consider buying from.
