Fixing foam wings

Recommended Posts

Look, I may well just be being thick here, and leaving myself open to ridicule, but.....how do you fit foam wings to a decoy ?

Can't find any instructions on the web, so I assume you take a full bodied decoy, cut out slots on the sides, and shove the foam wings in, same with the tail ?

If so, seems a bit "Heath Robinson", and how do you gauge the gap so they don't just drop out ?

Am I missing something blindingly obvious ?

thats about it, if put in right they wont drop out, simple system that works surprisingly well.

should add that the cut for the wing is a curve upwards rather than a straight cut, this grips the wing well and shapes it.

4mm slot on wing with T cut to allow the stiff plastic to flex.

Tail is cut off decoy and sawcut made. The two ends under the sawcut flex enough to fit the tail.

Fixing point for steel rod made out of 13mm box section with an m8 wingnut.

I found these very easy to carry, they just sit in with the other shells if you put them on the bottom so the box section inside doesn't foul :good:

On a separate note, has anyone got a cheap source for the foam wings? I know you can cut them out of a camping mat but I cant be ***** painting them and I'd make a rubbish job of it.

I buy mine from a chap who has a decoying stand at Melton Mowbray cattle market on tuesdays. I have a business card of his somewhere if I can find it.

They're a fiver a set

Cheers, just bought a brand new set for 6 quid (plus postage) and lost one of the wings in a gale, first time out on Thursday

Thanks all, was worth posting, hadn't thought about

A using a shell, or

B putting a curve on the cut.

Will get the tools out this weekend !

I think I did a tenon saw cut then ran a 4mm drill in and along it as if I was milling the slot out. The drill follows the initial cut well enough. Then I cut the corners off the T. Tuck the foam wing in enough to get a grip and then pull it in from the inside :good:

Found the number, it's A-A Decoys . As well as Melton they usually have a stand at most shows, don't know what the score is re delivery :hmm:

Think they're based in Cumbria :good:

Might aswell show you the other end.

It's a bit of copper tube about 150mm long with the end squashed flat in a vice and formed to a point with tin snips. A length of weathered 4mm bright mild steel rod is bent and swivels in it, then a hole is drilled across, deburred and a short length of paracord fitted to help pull it out of the ground :good:

Because it's a lightweight shell this is more than enough to support it and the lightest of winds moves it.

I tried that but found, esp in the summer, that they still go rank even if there's not much meat as such on them.

Stink and maggots in my pigeon bag was the result.

Don't know if there's a way around that :hmm:
