Ireland's Finest!
Well lads, I've started to catch magpies regluarly now and I've run into a bit of a problem I've more magpies than traps now the obvious thing would be too kill the surplus ones but I don't want to do that. So we're should I keep the other one's, I was thinking of building some sort of cage? Any suggestions? , ,
gyp
What are you catching them for if your not going to kill them? They are wild birds either kill them or stop trapping.
Ireland's Finest!
The reason I don't want to kill them is because I don't want to run out of call birds.
gyp
But if your running more than one trap and looking after the call birds you should be fine.
BerettaSV10
Does not seam right to trap a wild bird and then to keep them for a call bird, and agree with gyp kill them or stop trapping them. I have not done any vermin shooting and not up to speed on the law on this side and wondering if it is legal or not to trap wild birds and then keep them and use them in this way. I can understand people / RSPCA etc keeping them caged when injured to be released later on, but not for this reason. I am not a anti, just believe if you are doing pest control for what ever reason its best to do a quick clean or humane kill and not cause a bird or animal (like foxes & bunnies) any suffering. gyp
Call birds are allowed but i wouldn't keep an avairy of wild birds. http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practice/trapping-pest-birds.cfm

al4x
swap the call birds for fresh ones regularly and tap them on the head, no need to keep more if you have a number of traps out you won't run out if you look after them properly

A fresh one would bring them in better.

Alycidon
Been running larsens for about 6 weeks, we runs 5 top entry and a round side entry which crows love once you can get a decoy. So far we have had around 40 magpies and 10 crows. We are almost at the point where we have few left to catch. I had one today of a group of 3 I am targeting. Catamong
Just wondering lads, how many magpies would you's trap in an average year? A few years back I had 63, from the end of March to mid July, from a single trap, in my own back garden no less. They just kept on coming, between 7.00 and 7.30am was the best time. Cat.
