bicykillgaz
hi, i'm after a cheap 8x56 scope for my .22lr and i've seen an edgar brothers opti-mate 8x56, i've never used an edgar brothers scope before so just wondered what there like and how they compare to other low/er end scopes like hawke, nikko or richter optik thanks in advance atb gary
tweedledee
yes if its the gold label opti mate which comes in the white box with red writing. the silver labels are a cheaper version. i have had a few of them.only one fixed mag. really good scope and very under rated. bigstevouk
They are a copy of leopolds if i remember correctly, they have jap lenses and are very good glass, for there price they are hard to beat in quality... hth
Redgum
optimate are edgar brothers own scope, Japanese glass and I'm pretty sure built there as well.( well they were, the sunami may have change that).Never owned one but apparently they are excellent in glass and build quality. There is also a budget version, think its opti one which uses cheaper glass and is constructed in China. The optimate range are much better class than the cheaper Hawkes, richter optik and nikko, more up with Nikon, leupold.

bicykillgaz
got home and unwrapped the scope there is a couple or tiny tiny marks on the body but thats been really picky, otherwise brilliant condition. more importantly its exceptionally clear and so far i'm really happy! on the downside the mounts don't fit my rifle so i've just ordered some and a butler creek bikini cover which has cost me another £26 but so in alls cost me £118 as the scope was £85 plus £7 p&p. i still feel like i've got a bargain so happy days! i hope everything arrives friday ready to get out saturday and zero. i'll let you know how i get on. atb gary Edited May 11, 2011 by bicykillgaz
V8 90
I have just bought a 3-12x52 Optimate Dual x for my Hmr - it should be here Monday/Tuesday next week, it's replacing a Hawke Eclipse 3-12x56, after reading this thread I'm looking forward to getting it even more
bicykillgaz
i might end up needing that hawke off you if i don't get sorted soon, the scope is brilliant unfortunately the mounts i want to replace have got an odd size allen key i've even been and bought some new ones in both imperial and metric and none fit, i'm absolutely fuming. I've had to try and drill one allen key out as its completely rounded off, just my look i've now got a nice scope i can't use, i'm not superstitious but i'm begining to bloody wonder!! If anyones got any ideas how i can sort this i'm all ears, i'm gonna end up launching it at the wall. Gary
bicykillgaz
sorted it the three that wasn't rounded i ground down a slightly larger allen key to fit, but the fourth was a lost cause so i got my little dremmel tool out and carefully used mini grinding and cutting bits to cut away the outside edge and bent it about to pop out the bolt, i've got a couple of nice scratches now but atleast i can actually use it. V8 90
You'll be popping up to Kexby for a new set of mounts then I would have recommended an "easyout" but you've got sorted now. So ------ How good is it ??
bicykillgaz
hello v8, my mounts turned up this morning from j r ramsbottom so saved a trip to paul at kexby, i've just got it mounted and waiting for the wind to die down a bit before going out to zero it. the scope its self (although carrying a few scars now since the battle of the bracket) is really really clear i'm very impressed with it, i just wish the guy i bought it off (ebay) had been honest about the rounded off screw i'm guessing thats why he was selling it as the scope is great. i think you'll be impressed with it. atb gary
bicykillgaz
i finally got out to zero it last night at 7pm but it was that windy i couldn't zero in my normal paddock i had to resort to going into the middle of the woods and findind a nice sheltered area. Then the next battle was finding a clear gap through the trees and shrubs with a decent backstop, luckily the soil round there is like sand and on two sides there is a raised bank which is ideal, after about another 15mins trying to select a 60yrds clear gap through the undergrowth i was ready, it was a bit of a pain as the light was poor been in the middle of nettles, bracken and under the canopy of the woods and the fact my bi-pod kept sinking in the sand didn't help but about 25 shots later i was happy my next 4 clover leafed and the 5th was half inch to the right but that was me, so i packed up and went looking for some rabbits, i got three in the end but they all had mixie which i'm gutted about, i ended giving up at about 9.45 as the light had gone, but all in all very impressed with the scope. tweedledee
in my opinion, these opti mate scopes are massively underrated and probably not discovered by the masses.my only gripe is that they don`t offer a mil dot version which i prefer.my advice is if you come across one buy it as i`m sure no one will be dissappointed
