21G cartridges will break clays just as well as 28G ones, a good 21G cartridges is the Hull comp X 21G. I paid a £140 a 1000 for plastic wad recently.

Another main advantage is there is less recoil with 21G, so theres less thump on the shoulder, although both Hull Comp X's in 21G & 28G have very little recoil. Which can be a major advatage for new people to shooting, and can also allow girls use a 12 bore more efectivally.

The only disadvantage of 21G cartridges I can think of is that not all semi autos will cycle them, I am lucky my benelli s/a will cycle with 21G.

Edit: typo in the origional price I showed.

Hello - as a newbie (been shooting about a year) - in an attempt to save money is there any mileage in practising on clays with 21g cartridges and then switching to 28g for competitions - what are pros and cons?

What are you shooting? Probably best to stick to one type of cart but no reason not to use 21g or 28g for everything currently shooting some 24g, heavy on recoil and not exactly cheap.

Reason for asking is that Sporting Targets (Risley) sell 21g under own brand name (but made by Hull) @ 21g x £140 - seem to be cheaper than 28g I'm for paying at the moment.

Hi All,

I think 21gm would be an excellent choice for you if your having issues with recoil. They'll easily break all normal club type targets and personally I would just stick with them for your comps aswell unless your shooting serious FITASC or alot of long battues or similar.

EXPRESS HV - Usually a little more money than the others but performance is very good and recoil low but not the softest on the market.

HULL COMP X - Excellent, cheaper then Express, softest on the shoulder with good performance. Occasional issues with confetti fibre wads but not enough to put me off.

GAMEBORE XLR - My personal favourite, similar price and performance to the Hull. Fibre wad only with no confetti and in 8 shot rather than 7.5 which I prefer in a light load.

ELEY FIRST LITE - Personally I think Eley have got their offering in 21gm totally wrong. Performance wise they seem fine and regards price they may well be the cheapest in some areas but the recoil/muzzle flip is the same as your average 28gm load and they're nothing like as smooth as the others.

If your using a heavy sporter then all of the above will feel very light including the Eleys as the 8lb+ weight of your gun will soak all the recoil up but if your using a light game gun as I do, you will be able to tell the difference between the brands.

Hope this helps

WR.
