Kes
I'm just a bit perplexed. Is it not illegal to reduce a smooth bored gun below 20 inches? - does that not make it a 'prohibited weapon'. I didnt think that would be legal even if it was subsequently deactivated or reclassified as sec 1 - what legal use could it have had before deactivation? What would be the point in owning, one even if it was a legally deactivated firearm?
DaveK
Perhaps, maybe, possibly it could have been chopped when it was deactivated?

Chris B123
It could be used as a movie prop.

Because its deactivated-its no longer a functioning gun and therefore not a weapon (unless of course its used as a club).Had it still been in use then yes-it would be illegal because of its length. Kes
so we are saying it has to have been cut down after it was deactivated - otherwise it would have been a prohibited weapon. Does this mean one can have a deactivated mp 640 e.g., even though sub -machine guns are prohibited weapons? Still begs the question of why you would want a 'counterfeit' weapon. You can have anything if its deactivated as it becomes a bit of scrap at that point . as to who would want it , a wannabe who cant get an FAC/SGC but wants to impress his mates , seriously though there are a lot of people out there who like to collect these items for all sorts of reasons . Yep you can bet your bottom dollar there are those who want them for illegal purposes , but if it was me looking down the barrel of a sawn off 12 bore would you be thinking do I feel lucky , is it a deact ? Some people just like to collect deactivated firearms-thats all.It dont mean they're gonna pop into their nearest post office and make an unauthorised withdrawl with one or threaten someone.I know someone who has a collection of deact rifles, pistols, machine guns etc and to him its just a hobby. Wouldnt life be dull if we all liked the same things?
LEFTY478
De-act'd sawn-offs make useful toys if you're in to proper terror sex. Does it come with a gimp suit?
Kes
All good points - not sure about the gimp suit though. It would be a sad world if we were all the same but I worry about anyone who keeps a deactivated 'whippet'. Seems like someone dirty harry (magnum force) would want to 'punk'. Mark-70
My local RFD sells deactivated BARs Browning machine guns, AK47s etc the list goes on. As long as it's deactivated it is no longer prohibited. Go into a post office with it however and it's still armed robbery wether it's functional or not. So I can see both sides of the discussion.
