Hello mate,

I dont use a primus, but like most things any call takes practice.

go onto the www.crowbusters.com site and listen to some of the sounds they have on -line, then try to imitate them.

it will take time. good luck

I think it always sounds strange when you use a new call.

All you can do is practice.

I use a olt A4 call and find it easy to use.

The tone is easy to change by placing the mouth on different parts of the call or holding it in your teeth.

However you must practice and find the right notes time and time again if you want to cheet the clever corvids that we chase.

The BIG secret with ANY crow call is blowing the RIGHT note at the RIGHT time. I know this from long experience and am so **** at it that I use an electronic call (for photographic purposes only of course).

My long time partner in crime, Lazza, often mooches on here and he really knows his stuff with mouth calls. He may be able to help you. :/

I hope you may be able to pick a few things out of this and try them. I use two methods to shoot crows, by standing in cover and calling them over, or decoying.

When I'm standing in cover, I always cover any white bits I may have :*) with a face mask, a hat and gloves. I then stand dead still in the cover and start calling. I use an acme caller which was dead cheap, and does what I need it to do. I haven't used the other callers but you've already had people recommend others to you, so I'm sure they work fine. The caller I use allows you to squeeze it with you're mouth to vary the pitch(very useful for jackdaws). Anyway back to the calling. I usually start with three blows on the caller, and then wait for a reply. do this three or four times. If no reply then I carry on walking. If you get a reply, no matter how far away, stay in the same place. When a bird calls to me, I never reply with the same call, and I never blow above three calls. For example if a bird calls me twice I will rely back with three, if he calls me with once I will reply back with two, and if he calls me three times I will reply back with one or two and so on.

If your lucky you should hear the bird coming closer to you, once he gets close stop calling unless he veers off, then a quick call should bring him back. Close is difficult to define, but basically I want him to fly over me without being seen. All the time the bird is coming you must stand absolutely still, as the bird will be looking for the source of the call. I wait until the bird is just above me and then lift the gun and shoot, some people have their gun up ready, but I can't hold the gun still enough to do that. The reason I wait until he is right above me is that the bird is going to flare when he see's the movement, and gain a few yards in the process.

The other method is decoying, and I might have a couple of tips for you to try.I am always set up ready before light, and I don't get out of the hide unless it's absolutely necessary. I always put a roof on my hide, and always make the hide as small as possible,(sitting down is better, as it is hard to stand still) with a sort of letterbox to shoot out of, again use the mask and gloves etc, as the birds may be flying straight at you, and don't move till the last minute. I put my decoys only 15- 20 yards away from the hide, so that I can get a shot as the bird veers off when I move. Again when your calling the bird in, if he's coming there's no need to blow, unless he moves away, a quick blow should bring him back. also this year I've started lofting a crow in a nearby tree, and that seems to work ok, but I've not used it enough to say what difference it actually makes.

Anyway, sorry to rattle on. This is only based on what I do, and I'm sure there is alot of experienced crow shooters, who can help you out with their experiences.

Good Luck

If you're decoying, then when you've shot a few take a few jackdaws back into the hide and break their wings if a faroff crow does not look interested give a couple of loud calls and chuck the jackdaw into the pattern, the fluttering combined with the call is an absolute magnet. I just use my voice when doing this, it does not need to be an especially realistic call but just to get their attention. Give it a try.

I have a primus power crow call - it sounds like a duck call to me :/

I also had rabbit squeeker thingy. In my opinion there is always someone willing to sell absolute cack to gullible eager punters who believe the adverts.

Both of the above were sent to me by mail order after ordering something else - which was allegedly out of stock... "try this more expensive item for the same price" trick makes you feel that you should be gratefull

I'm not saying these things never work - you have to get lucky sometimes right?

I sp'ose there has to be just as many gullible birds... :*)

I went out last week and put down an owl decoy with a dead rabbit I had shot at the foot of it. I then put a craw decoy close to the owl, with my trusted acme caller I started calling and then all of a sudden about 5 craws were on top of the owl although I managed to bag 2. I just sat in amongest the whin bushes without covering my face or hands but the craws didnt seem to bother, the owl acted like an electro-magnet. I didnt really think it would work just decided to give it a go.

One thing to watch if you blow on the call too loudly when the craws are ontop of you theyll get scared and go away.
