Buying my first gun - newbie from Lancs

Hi all

This is my first post. I am new to shooting but my licence has arrived and i'm ready to buy my first gun. I had one lesson at Kelbrook shooting school (very enjoyable) and shot with a beretta silver pigeon universal 30" sporter. I'm a 6 footer so do I need 30" barrels or will 28" do? I hope to spend around the £400 mark on a gun and come away with some cartridges thrown in. The model I really fancy is a Lanber (cant find anyone with a bad word to say about them). I handled one or two in Bond and Bywater in Preston and they "felt" right and there are a few around in my price range. Not sure why but also would consider a Lincoln. Any advice would be welcome. What do I look for when buying a secondhand gun?

Cheers

Paul

really depends what your going to use it for game/pigeons /rabbits ect if your going to use it mainly for pest control pigeons ect a shorter barrel length is good for hide work or shooting in woods where length would be limited, you might also consider a auto,i have a lincoln and find it excellent quality for the money :good:

Barrel length is not crucial, its a personal thing, whatever feels right. Lanber and Lincoln are both good solid guns in your price bracket. Key thing is that the gun fits you, perhaps find a shop where they will let you try a few and help you check for fit, without giving it the hard sell on what they need to shift. On the mobile site so can't see where you are, but perhaps ask a local to recommend a good honest shop near you.

What to look for? Loads of stuff, but key being tight on its face, no rust or pitting in the bores, forend not loose and safety, electors and triggers all work as designed. A bit less risky buying from a shop as there will be some sort of warranty.

Edit: see you've had the local shop recommendation :good:

I don't want to get in to a debate about gunshops, but go directly to Malmo and Bamfords - in that order. Far better quality guns at decent prices. Tim McAvoy at Standish and Entwistles at Preston are worth a look.

Cheers Gordon

I must admit I fancy shopping at Malmo because at least I will get to shoot before I buy. Just happened to be passing through Preston with the missus and called in at B&B for 5 mins. Guys in shop were helpful enough......

You just did! Nothing wrong with Bond and Bywater, other than thier humour :good: . When you get to know them they are glad for you to try second hand shotties before you part with cash via taking them out for a round of clays etc. They can fix most things which is usefull and send away that which they cannot. One of the dealers mentioned above cannot measure chokes with thier own gauge like the difference between improved and full! How they manage to appraise swappers etc i haven't a clue  another had secondhand shotguns in thier rack that were both loose and off the face! He knew, just didn't appear to care much. No way would you get that at B+B. i have bought guns off all these dealers but just ordered my next new gun from Bond + Bywater, perhaps that should tell you something?

If your in the North West Check out Cheshire Gun Room in Stockport and AD Supplies in Northwich. Worth shopping around to see what's about! CGR also have a branch in Bolton. AD tend to stock a few secondhand 12g so you might drop on something, but CGR have loads of stock. I heard that Countryman of Derby are good on price for new stuff, not sure about secondhand. Hope you get what your after!

I was only highlighing a couple of options.. all others outlets mentioned on here are good too..Hope you find what your after!
