Do pigeon not like hot weather...?

sometimes they sit in the trees at the peak hours and may come back out again in the afternoon when it has cooled down a bit. If there is a bit of a breeze it helps :good:

I would say you want to pack up and return at around 4-5pm and then if they do return you could be shooting until 8-9pm i have had good bags late evenings but would defo leave a day like this alone you need dull days and a strong breeze. pigeons dont like to feed in the heat they will just be roosting till it cools down.

I shot over some laid barley last week, plenty of birds about from about 1 'til 3 then they dried up. Up until then it was breezy and a bit overcast. As soon as the breeze dropped and the cloud passed over it was pack up time.

Have shot some big bags when it has been 28c+ but if i no its going to be red hot i try to go late afternoon .

As for going 6ish you have to think that this time of year its light at 3.3am so they will of had a good feed but its always worth a try and see what happends :good:

To say you can't decoy pigeons in searing heat is just wrong. Some of my most memorable days of the past few years have been in 25-30 degrees without even a breath of wind. If pigeons are hungry and want to be on your chosen field, they will come. If they don't come in, it's probably for a different reason than how hot it is.

Im finding it hard this year around by me! all the crops are stunted and there is a different mix of crops also to add to the confusion of whats happening, they are about as ive been decoying 2 days a week over the last 3 weeks to get my eye-in on patterns and flight lines , the one banker of a shoot in warm weather is a grass field of clover with a overly large muck heap with shallow water all year around with 60 acres of wheat at the back of it ! its been awesome the last few years ! but this year maize has been planted and the water has gone :(..... now the last few weeks has been a tad interesting ! for a few hours work i normally have about 10 birds , but of them only a couple are coming into the pattern the rest are just on the flightline going somewhere for a sit down ! im guessing another 3-4 weeks and england is going to come alive with pigeons on crops you can just sense it starting , but there holding back for whatever reasons crop related or breeding related! they are most definately quiet in the heat at the moment ! hopefully that will all change when the feeding frenzy starts !

I went out last year on a boiling hot day on wheat stubble (28 degrees) and the birds were few and far between, it was so damn hot I packed up and went home then returned late afternoon...more than anything because I can't stand blazing sunshine and it was too hot for the mutt. Once back there were plenty more birds and it was much nicer shooting conditions for me and the dog. I found last week on laid barley the birds just weren't interested once the weather became still/sunny, there were plenty of birds there but only flighting in/out of the field on a flight line which I couldn't shoot without dropping them into the barley. They were dropping in to the decoys off the flight line until the weather changed :/

Pigeons will feed at any time of the day winter and summer . Because of the longer days in the summer the birds dont have to chase about for a feed in daylight . I tend to shoot pigeons between dawn and 10 am and 2 pm and dusk in mid summer . In winter you need to be on the fields for all the daylight hours . On really hot days the birds do tend to sit up in the shade waiting for it get cooler .

Harnser .
