MARK 1
mate i've got a 7 year old lab & a 2 yaer old springer. in my opinion it's down to what you want the dog for. for example you;ll naver get a more faithful dog than a lab,but my springer is doing things @ 2 what the lab could'nt @ 4. saying that the lab was'nt as highly strung or i might add as destructive as the springer is . hope this help's mate. ps. make sure you see the pup's parent's before you part with your hard earnd cash, that way you no they have not been stolen & that they are kc registered. regards mark

rjimmer
People only have other breeds because they have never had a Flatcoat. They point, they retrieve, they go to sleep in 20 degrees of frost, they dive for ducks, they carry pheasants 3 at a time, they retrieve ducks 2 at a time, they lick everybody, they embarrass you, they impress everybody else, they keep clean with a straw bed, they will tell you if anyone is around the premises, they will carry dead foxes, they will try to carry dead deer etc, etc, etc. One that I had found 89 pigeons one evening after the shooting was all over. Not just in the wood that she had been in. Everybody had birds to find all over the place. If you are on your own and only have one dog then a Flatcoat is the only friend you need. BigDave15
German Short Haired pointers can be stupid ! The troble is because they need good training. My uncles is alright but my mates got one thats a pain in the back side I feal like kicking it sometimes it bit me once so I did. There good dogs for Deer they have a grate nose but I gess there to hard to train your better off geting a more popular breed.
Catamong
RJ, Scuse my ignorance, but is a flatcoat a nickname for a GSP? I used to shoot with a guy who had a GSP - it got so excited about the possibility of spending a day in the hide it used to sit up whining the night before the shoot keeping the family awake - it came to recognise the sound of my mate loading his hide poles into the 4WD...!!! It was a very versatile dog, and good natured, but a bit scatty - sometimes it was so keen to get out of the hide to retrieve it would literally charge straight through the nets, taking them with him into the field. rjimmer
Scuse my ignorance, but is a flatcoat a nickname for a GSP? I can't bring myself to type much after reading that. Have a look here. All my flatcoats trace back to this lady. http://www.flatcoated-retrievers.com/patie...ience_lock.html She died in 1980 after seeing a Flatcoat win Crufts for the first time. I went to her funeral. Her husband could not face life without her and, a few months later, put his head on the local railway line in front of a train. new to the flock
Rjimmer: A regel breed and a fine discription. The Flat Coat is a truely great hunter, who is very easy to look after, and a fine breed for our young EGNWT to look into.
