Gemini
Ok as it says in the title, has anyone got an old PC that they are chucking out. My niece wants one to get back onto the net, as the old Win 98 that she had has gone tits-up. She can’t afford to buy another one and is looking to me and my missus to try and sort it out. HELP!!!!!!! G.M.

Gemini
Thanks for the offer LG, but I wouldn’t know where to start. My wife’s family think I’m a bloody computer wizard because I once installed a 56K Modem for them. Thanks for the thought though. G.M. Cranfield
There are some very cheap S/H ones usually available in our local papers and free Ads. When people upgrade they have trouble even giving their old ones away. You can buy a complete new set up, for about £300 nowadays. Good luck. Gemini
Yes I know, and even better, my lad went onto the net for a mooch and saw PC world was selling a E-101, Windows XP, tower & monitor + keyboard & mouse for the grand total of £289. I tell them that they can buy one just as easily, but they don’t want to spend their money on a new one, which is why I get the *******’ job of trying to fix up the old ones that they have. Thanks anyway. G.M.

Millomite
How urgent is it?
Gemini
Sorry Henry, but I don’t know what a Vic 20 is, although I would suppose it’s a PC. The PC she has at the moment is just an old Win 98 that was bought through a catalogue some years ago, so all she needs is a PC that she can connect to the net with. It doesn’t even matter if it doesn’t have a 56k modem as she has just bought a new one for the 98. trouble is it is simply refusing to load anything; keeps coming up as “Error RPC stub etc” whatever that means. I had a look through the system and it would seem that this is something to do with “Fat 32” (or something like that) and apparently it isn’t installed. Don’t know where it’s gone but it isn’t there anymore. Nobs, it isn’t really urgent, she just wants to get up and running I suppose as she has already got the Dial-up installed. G.M. plexer
Ok fat32 is the format of the filesystem on the hard drive, others include fat16 and ntfs if it starts to load at all it can't be missing as the hard drive would be completely knackered. There must be a tech savvy member close enough to you to sort something out I hope. I will see what I got at work next week if you like. Gemini
Cheers Plexer. LG, I thought the predecessor of the C64 was the C16 which we all had. Everything had to be written in dos if I remember correctly. Bloody useless they were. G.M.

They are about four to six years old and still function. We used to give them to a charity that sent them to African Schools. Then we used to send them to a local College. Two conditions: You have to collect them yourself. You have to sign a piece of paper with a photocopy of your driving license saying that you will wipe the Hard Drive and install your own operating system and that if Microsoft identifies two instances running, yours is the pirate version and they can have your nuts on toast Sorry for fuss but there's people trying to nail companies for software abuse. PM me if interested.
