oscarsdad
After a long morning at work having had no sleep due to babysitting my girlfriend's mum's parsons Russell pup which whined all night and nearly got locked in the shed I decided to have a couple of hours this evening on a private stretch of the river Blythe which I have just joined. I am still digging out all of my trout gear after moving house so ended up using #7 at reservoir rod as the only floating line I could find was a #7...not ideal as the river is only about 15ft wide but it will do. Less than 5 min drive to get there through packington estate past the deer and the fields which are being harvested right now-I have never seen so many pigeons anywhere...the sky was blue with them never mind the stubble! If only I could get permission on there! Down to the river and decide on upstream nymph to start with so on goes a small pheasant tail which I tied a few years ago....after a few casts a little roach takes the fly, nice to see. I wandered upstream casting into the exits to the few pools and managed to winkle out a nice perch and a pristine little chublet. I saw some enormous chub swim by and also a couple of double figure carp which is amazing for the size of the river and this made me look forward th 15th October when the river changes from trout only to coarse fishing so the winter chubbing looks great! Moved further upstream and finally had a proper pull from a trout and hooked it, almost instantly there was a crack and I saw the top third of my rod slide down the fly line! To cut a long story short, lost the fish, went home in a huff and sent a strongly worded email to the manufacturer as I have only used the rod 5 times! Anyway...at least I have seen the potential of my new fishery and it had taken my mind of all the pigeons I can see in my village but the farmer has not responded to my texts to let me decoy them yet! oscarsdad
Shakespeare! But it is their top of the range one. I have had a Shakespeare spinning rod snap on my very first cast before as well! But they did replace it with a much better one so hopefully it will get resolved. ack-ack
Have you ever used gold heads or the like with it in the past? A clonk from one of them when casting seriously compromises the blank. EDIT: PS - always have a spare in the motor. Nothing worse than doing your only rod in, especially if its a day ticket job. oscarsdad
Yes I have used weighted lures on it so I suppose it could have been that...I am still hoping that it will be replaced for free tho! Luckily only live 5 minutes away and can fish there whenever I want as I have an access key to the estate...very frustrating tho as the fish were just starting to rise - I will be back there tomorrow evening
ziplex
Last year I spent a few hours at Barrow tanks, not much moving about after what seemed an age so in desperation, and because my shoulder was giving me grief, I put on a booby and Di7 line....on retrieving the line to recast to a different spot I got caught up on the bottom and in frustration I jerked the rod up and back and snapped it it was a lovely Carbotec Elite that i'd had for years and was one of the few rods I could cast a full line with. Decided to pack up then and trudge back to the car swearing at the sheep on the way Edited July 29, 2011 by ziplex
Cranfield
Anyway...at least I have seen the potential of my new fishery and it had taken my mind of all the pigeons I can see in my village but the farmer has not responded to my texts to let me decoy them yet! Dunkield
Have you ever used gold heads or the like with it in the past? A clonk from one of them when casting seriously compromises the blank. I was always amazed how many rods other people broke as it never happened to me, but carrying 2 rods along a year or so ago the hit each other, not even hard. First cast after that one of them broke like a carrot - exactly a week before a trip abroad I had been forward to all year :( I always took 2 with me and always will for exactly that reason and I wouldn't buy any rod that doesn't have a guarantee, even if it is limited. crossover
You may get the rod section replaced by the maker, I once broke a Greys rod and they replaced without complaint. Since then I have always recommended them as it was a pleasure to deal with them Nick
oscarsdad
Manufacturers response has just been emailed -'sorry'. Very disappointing and I shall not be buying anything Shakespeare again and shall stick to better quality kit with better support from the manufacturer. Now I have to buy another rod especially as my girlfriend has decided he wants to take up fly fishing! (my fault for paying for her to have a lesson at the CLA fair)

Now I have to buy another rod especially as my girlfriend has decided he wants to take up fly fishing! (my fault for paying for her to have a lesson at the CLA fair) That surprises me OD. With the influx of often superior and cheaper eastern tackle coming onto the market I thought one of our own manufacturers would have flown the flag and sorted you right out. You can get some good sticks at decent prices now. I've got some of the best and supposedly worst in rods. My £35 ebay special ****** all over my Sage and I can use any fly with it. If it breaks so what? Everytime the Sage comes out I'm worried about knacking it as I have done with other rods in the past. It is bliss to use on the drys though. oscarsdad
I have been looking on eBay and there is a seller called tackle discounts who seem to have loads of good feedback and there are reviews of some of the rods where a lot of people are saying they will never buy a sage or loomis rod again - I was a little dubious whether they are real reviews but I might give one a go as they are only about £25 delivered and like you say, not the end of the world if I snap it. Dunkield
I would look at Greys rods, I have 3 or 4 now and can't see me using anything else. It was one of those I broke to tip on, so I stuck it in a tube along with 30 quid and they sent a new one back, I didn't even have the guarantee for that rod. tacklebargains is another site if you looking for something a bit cheaper. Thats them!! They do Flextech rods but beware. When I bought my one (11ft 7-8)they were saying they were reduced from £200 quid. For the pennies I was paying and the returns policy I couldn't go wrong so I bought one. There is no way in a million years that these rods would ever have retailed at £200 succesfully. The spec on them is that of a cheap rod, the action is stiff and the rods are heavy however they are bloody powerful, I can pick up a full cast off the top cleanly and punch it straight back out again without any indiana jonesing, not something the Sage will entertain. They play a fish well also and you get a pukka rod tube. I only bought my one for saltwater use after the bass and macka but i never leave it at home if I head up the resy. If you're not happy you can send them right back. I've bought alot from this store including pukka Scierra waders at nigh on half price and I've never been dissapointed.
