M.I.A
I have a AYA Model No 3, it has 3" Chambers and is proofed to 1200KGS with Imp Cyl & 1/4 Choke. Will i be ok to put steel shot shells through it? Thanks Edited September 4, 2011 by M.I.A
Ricko
There are other factors to consider eg: the condition of the barrels, age of the gun etc. If you have a good relationship with your local RFD/gunsmith then pop down there and ask his opinion. coneyhunter
unles you see the fleur de lay ( probably spelt wrong) symbol or it states it is steel shot proofed i would not entertain the idea, steel loads prouduce higher pressures than lead and you could cause damge to your barrels
kent
If inspected it should be fine with std steel - high performance is dodgey but many do it
Spara Dritto
Isn't 1/4 and IC the same choke size?
shakin stevens
I have a AYA Model No 3, it has 3" Chambers and is proofed to 1200KGS with Imp Cyl & 1/4 Choke. Will i be ok to put steel shot shells through it? Thanks Have got the same gun and had it years, it was full choke in each barrel had it bored out to half and half, put plenty of steel through it for foreshore ducks, plus hevi shot on geese. The gun is still like new tight on the action and bores fine, like folk have said have it checked out before you make your mind up, i could not afford a new gun when lead was banned so i used it. M.I.A
Thanks for the advice chaps, i will get it in to my local gunsmith to get his views. Imp Cyl is not quite the same as 1/
Spara Dritto
Interesting stuff, so which choke throws a wider pattern?
M.I.A
Imp Cyl. But in all honesty there isnt much difference.

Imp Cyl is not quite the same as 1/4 It is if you mix American and British descriptions. My winchester choke has both marked on it
Scully
I would have said nothing tighter than half choke for steel, which is what most recommend(on guns not proofed for steel),but I've been browsing on an American forum recently and found many, many shooters are putting steel through their guns(including some good English guns not proofed for steel)regardless of choke or steel proof, with no detremental effects.I'm not advocating this practise by any means, but am now prepared to keep an open mind until I've read further.Must admit I know of no instances where non-steel proofed guns have failed, but then again I haven't really been looking.Have any conclusive tests been undertaken, does anyone know? M.I.A
Imp cyl on my choke gauge doesnt fit in the 1/4 choke barrel Im going to pop my gun to the gun smith tomorrow to get his views, but from what i have read it SHOULD be ok. If the gunsmith says no then i wont I shall let you know what he says
M.I.A
Went to my gunsmiths, Some steel is ok to use. Lyavale Express Hunting Steel, In 3,4, 5 & 6 shot @ 32g's is safe to use in my gun Shame i cant get any bigger shot in steel, so its either Tungstun or Bismuth but i dont fancy that much @ over £2 a bang
