M.I.A
I set my alarm for 5am this morning, got up and sorted and was at one of my permissions for 6am I have recently been given a load of crayfish by a friend in exchange for a rabbit or 2. So i set off with the sole intention of bagging a few rabbits. I've encountered MR fox before so i took some of the "heavy" stuff, I have also seen some canadian geese flighting over this permission so i took some steel just in case. I quickly unpacked all my gear and set off. 3 Rounds of 32g No5 Loaded and ready to go. Within 100 yards from my car i came across a lone rabbit i raised the shotgun and he quickly went down. I carryed on down the hedge row towards some woodland where i know there are tonnes of rabbits. I slowly make my way down but i cant see any rabbits... it was still quite dark with the sun behind the woods but there was nothing! So i carried on walking along the woods, then i get to an opening that over looks a field (uphill) and around 100 yards away on the brow of the hill was no one else but MR Fox! i froze on the spot, droped my self down and slowly made my way behind a fallen tree. He was still there non the wiser to my pressence. I started to squeek him in and he came running he got to around 70 yards and stopped. he went off to my left behind the woods and i lost sight, not giving up i sat for around 20mins still squeeking only to see him run from left to right through the opening. At the bottom of this field running through the woods is quite a deep stream and im guessing it didnt know a way through. Anyway i decided to cut my losses and crack on with the job in hand, Rabbits. I continued to walk around this large grass field and started going back up hill, i still couldnt see any rabbits anywhere. The ground leveled back out and i came to an opening in a field i slowly peered round to see around 4 rabbits around 30 yards away i raise my shotgun and all of a sudden i hear a noise i secretly wanted to hear. Geese, lots of them. I quickly fumbled around in my jacket pocket, unloaded all 3 rounds of lead and loaded some steel as fast as i could. But by this time they were right on top of me i raised my shotgun, bang 1st one fell, bang second one fell there were getting to far for the 3rd shot so i flicked the safety on. I went and picked up 2 very heavy canadian geese, both hit in the head. I lugged the 2 geese over to where i had placed the rabbit. I had just finished gutting it and i could hear geese again. Looked up and they were flying out to my right, but for some reason (maybe seeing there dead comrades) they came straight at me i dropped my knife and quickly picked up my shotgun. Bang number 3 in the bag then i went to fire again and nothing, I had forgot to reload. What a ****!!! I guess from the buzz and it all happening so quick reloading my gun just didnt happen. If it did im sure i would be coming home with 5 not 3, Well at least 4 haha. I didnt reload as i thought ****** am i carrying any more back to the car. as i was walking back 2 more groups of geese fly over head, followed by a group of mallards. I wouldnt have minded some of them but hey im happy with my bag so far. So much so i set of home. I was out for all of an hour. Good result i think and my first ever canadian geese. Now ive got the job of getting them ready for the oven
