SNAKEBITE
I read a letter in one of the comics at the weekend at it said that pigeons fly along magnetic lines in the earth and if you place your decoys along these lines you will do a lot better. This actually makes a bit of sense because the pigeon and the homing variety in particular must use something as a source of navigation and the last one I shot was not carrying a GPS so what do they use? How do you work out where the magnetic lines are? Are they related to the "ley lines" that criss cross this country? Any ideas?
Davej
They are talking about Magnetic field lines and come from Michael Faraday back in 1800 hundreds boring stuff, about electricity / north & south poles. Not sure where the pigeons come into it though. Lord Geordie
Interesting Theory Homing pigeons DO infact use the earths magnetic field as a homing beacon for want of a better word. Although WOOD pigeons i would assume either LOST this or fail to follow this practice as their flight lines are constantly changing and the earths magnetic fields only variate slightly. Just take a HUGE electro magnet into the field and ask the Farmer to plug it in you MAY get a whole flock into the field LG

Davej
I also recently read a story that said pigeons use the road systems to navigate!! This was on a nature program on sky a few weeks ago, They said they get used to the pattern the roads formed and followed them. Still not convinced

Lord Geordie
Early morning when the sun rises it rises due east Sets due west A needle rubbed on a key with a cork and a glass of water you can make a crude compass I beleive Moss only grows on the North side of a tree (may be south so long since i read i forgot) Plenty ways to know where your headed even as a Human I would look oin the internet and see if there is any references to local magnetic fields etc and try your theory out you never know LG Edited May 8, 2006 by Lord Geordie
lurcherboy
Yes mate ley lines are the same thing and I don't understand how they work but they can be followed by diviners with unbelievable accuracy. Do you know any druids ? LB
Catamong
I believe Woodies navigate by sight using large trees as marker points. I've also noticed that they do get badly spooked by the electromagnetic fields around high voltage overhead cables - they go bananas when flying nearby or over them. Cat. palombier
LG You are right to a point but the sun rises in the North East on the longest day(summer solstice) and south East on the shortest day(winter solstice) Just in case you ever get lost.
