Cranfield
What price are we all getting for fresh and frozen pigeons ? My Game Dealer has dropped the price for frozen birds to 30p and is now wanting fresh birds only..... for 30p. I have always mainly sold my birds in 100's frozen, so I don't have a large chiller, nor do I intend buying one. Its been suggested that if I keep the birds in a freezer (not turned on) with a few 2 litre bottles of frozen water in it, its as good as a chiller and the birds should be good for a few days. Has anyone else tried this, or have any other ideas ?

Cranfield
Defrost the birds beforehand? Do you mean shoot them, freeze them, defrost them and then send them to him ?

garden gun
I would have thought that freezing then defrosting could be a tad risky if the customer then re-freezes having made the assumption that the birds are "fresh".

This may be part of the problem, but I also think the Dealer's butcher is looking for a fast turnaround, rather than have the birds thawing in his chillers for a few days. Does anyone have any price information, or comments on the frozen water bottles/freezer idea ? Or perhaps the details of a decent Game Dealer in the Kent area. garyb
Get on eBay.. Lot's of chillers going on there. I bought a restaurant style desert fridge / come game larder for about £50 It's huge, and easily takes a Roe carcass.

motty
Someone suggested to me that changing the thermostat on a chest freezer to refrigerator one would keep them chilled. Don't know if it would work. Sometimes i keep pigeons in my fridge for a couple of weeks before taking them in. It holds around 75 pigeons. Cranfield
Thanks for the responses. I have been looking on eBay, but I think it may be a longish term project, as those that are available at a good price (all have to be collected) are mainly in the Midlands and the North. In the mean time I will have a look at the freezer settings.

Has anyone else tried this, or have any other ideas ? shoot the pigeon with steel shot and you will get 50p per bird from lad that breed hawks. where abouts in the UK are you i have a contact in the north west that will take every bird you can shoot
