A most pleasant day with Bakerboy.

Yesterday was the day that I met Terry for the first time and had my first Cray (hopefully of many).

Its been on the list of things to do for years but as with everything if you don't make the effort it won't get done. Yesterday I did make the effort and I'm very glad that I did both for ticking another one off the list and for meeting a thoroughly decent chap.

Being a chap that's never really at ease in a social situation I travelled up with a degree of nerves. As soon as I saw him waiting on the corner and I saw his tee-shirt that all evaporated as I knew it was going to be a blast. Within minutes it felt like I'd known him years.

We set about half a dozen drop nets baited with some old whiting that had been earmarked for human consumption at some point in the last few years but that had long since passed that point. Unfortunately they'd been prepped and were lacking their innards and heads so the majority of the attractant was lacking. We got off top a promising start with a big old donkey choker on the first lift and the crays came steadily over the next few hours.

I was made up just to be seeing a few but Terry was clearly dissapointed as this stretch had been the venue for some of the major hauls by other PW members at the height of the season. I had some good sport snatching the basking crays from the concrete sides of the channel with a kiddies net of the like seen at the beach. It was perfectly fit for purpose being a tight rigid mesh. They were visible to about 2ft in depth, some broke the surface, and all bar two escaped. It was like being a kid again. An overweight, chain smoking kid that is.

The conversation was of a sort I've not had in a good while. Mixing with folk of your own generation I find can limit conversation slightly as you've all experienced the same period in time albeit in your own ways. I could have listened to Terrys stories all day long though I do think he was having me on with his tale of riding to school with a shotgun lashed to the crossbar of his bike. He's a proper raconteur as I'm sure any of you that have had the pleasure will know.

Had some good banter with passing folk which for me is part of the joy of fishing. It gives those that wouldn't normally speak to anybody a good opener and people were cracking on all day and walking away smiling. There were a couple of gooduns, one guy was clearly bonkers and another had a syrup reminiscent of a 70's news casters follicular arrangement. Shock of the day for me had to be bumping into one of my relatives that I'd not seen for years as she walked along the river with a load of ramblers. Bit embaressing as I've always got reasons for not travelling up to see them and then I get caught red handed tossing it off 20 miles from their house. It could only happen to me.

The ebb and flood of the M25 dictated the duration of the session and I was back home in time to give the crays some tap water and head down the beach for high water to get a few whiting for tea.

A really enjoyable day. Terry, thanks for giving me your time, must do it again some time.

PS for anybody lucky enough to get a trip out with Terry dont give him any redbush tea out of the flask. It nearly gave him whiplash

Being a ginger (when I had hair) I am partial to a bit of redbush[/b but Robs was a little different. :hmm:

Rob was really good company and we had a good day, the fish did not attract as many Crayfish as I would have expected, but the water temperature had dropped and perhaps they are now slowing down.

I think the final count was about 50ish, the vast majority being a good size.

What chance meeting up with your Aunty, (young and very attractive I hasten to add) when I turned around and saw Rob in an embrace with this women, I thought hells bells (one of Robs many expressions, along with "proper job") you get these Kentish country boys up and they start to take advantage of our women folk, but no, it really was his Aunty.

Rob gave me a bag of freshly harversted Cockles and Razor Clams, which I will have tonight and tomorrow. I am really looking forward to them.

Rob you are more than welcome to come again,I will make you an Honoury Herts Boy

Good man, will take you up on that at some point I'm sure. Likewise if you fancy coming down the marsh for a tour I can show you all the places where there are no pigeons. At least we've got as decent chippy now though.

Bell me if you have an queries re. the clams chap.

An excellent write up, well done to you both.

Terry making friends up and down the country as usual, well done chap, if you carry on introducing people to the world of crayfishing, Britains rivers will soon be thriving with local cray once again!

My application for a crayfish licence is in and now waiting to be set free to fish till my hearts content.

:lol: They were very powerful!! I've still no idea why the Mrs was unscathed? I can only assume that the years of her cooking for herself prior to hooking up with me had toughened her insides . I reckon there must have been a few yellow stainers amongst the field mushrooms or something. I'd prefer to think it was a reaction with alcohol as some fungi you just can't mix. If you have spirits even a few days after eating ink caps you can get ruined.
