goldeneye243
I'm tempted to get a crow call to try and shoot more crows! Are there any that are better than others? The Acme one seems quite cheap is it any good? Are they easy to use?

pintail
Ive tried a fair few crow callers but the one that has proved itself the best in my opinion in getting the crows in especially jackdaws is the primos power caller

Pykie
Iv got a Sam Neyt, Primos and an Acme. Sam Neyt is my personal favourite as sounds very much like a Carrion Crow but when you bite on the call, can produce excellent jackdaw "pips". The Primos, being plastic, tends to get filled with moisture and so the reed gets stuck but also produces good calls. Acme is good for jackdaws but too highly pitched for other corvids, although Truckboy1 on here can get a very good crow "caw" out of his. But all require practice and patience to sound good enough to fool the wily Crow family Edited November 24, 2011 by Pykie
PhilR
The Primos, being plastic, tends to get filled with moisture and so the reed gets stuck but also produces good calls. Mine does too, especially in these damp conditions, and a blooming nuisance mid call. Now it's been apart a few times I can open it quite easily to strip and dry it. But S o d s Law says whilst I've got it spread out on my lap in the hide I'll have a crow or two over

steve_b_wales
Talking of which Steve, I'm still waiting for your YouTube video masterclass in crow calling I know Nick. I'll have to get off my '*****, and get it filmed. Mine does too, especially in these damp conditions, and a blooming nuisance mid call. Now it's been apart a few times I can open it quite easily to strip and dry it. But S o d s Law says whilst I've got it spread out on my lap in the hide I'll have a crow or two over I carry two Primos calls, and if one gets 'stuck' I just shake it a few times, and use the other one until it dries. steve_b_wales
I have the acme one and once you get tha knack of it, there brilliant. Only £10 too. Bargain In my many years experience of calling/shooting corvids, I have found that the ACME caller is only suitable for Jackdaws, as it produces a much higher pitch. If you can call Crows in with it, then great, but the Primos Power Crow caller will do a much better job, once you get used to using it. Frenchieboy
Primos Power Crow caller and just ordered another as a spare. The acme sound nothing like a crow. I have to agree with you there mate. I had an Acme Crow Caller and no matter how I tried it the damned thing sounded like Donald Duck with laringitis! It did putt the jackdaws in though! On a serious note - I think most of the different (Reasonable quality) crow callers available are much the same - It all depends on how you use them to get the different tones and calls which can take a little practice! Frenchieboy
I have now got the ACME one and I have got a primos one on order. Just need to practice with them! Thanks for all the input. In my opinion this is the most important thing whatever caller you use, you need to practice to get it to sound right and to produce the correct calls! I think that this is where some people get it wrong - They can get the right "pitch" or "tone" from their caller but if they are not using the correct calls it can have an adverse effect! Sometimes they go out and start calling without first studying the sort of calls that crows make under different circumstances (i.e. Mobbing call, distress call, etc.) I am led to believe that crows have a vocabulary of something like 20 plus "words"! Totally agree, it brings the jacks in perfect. rooks would almost do the oposite and take a wide birth, it does bring in the odd rook but more jacks than anything. Off to shop to pick up a primos i think got so many rooks that need sorting the only reason i didnt buy the primos first is due to sticking of the reed but i shall use it in moderation and hope it doesnt stick Edited November 27, 2011 by M.I.A
Frenchieboy
The Primos might (In some peoples opinions - I've never used one so I am not in a position to say) be a better caller than most other makes but I have never had any trouble with the reed in my Johnny Stewart caller that it seems that some of you have had with the Primos!
