il cacciatore
Was wondering what you would choose for Reds. The permission I have is roughly 3 miles x 3 miles (5, 760 acres) and it has reds on it as well as roe. .303 or .308?
miffy
I have only ever shot Reds with a .308 and had very good results.....(Don't use ballistic tips like i tried) I have since got rid of the .308 and will now shoot any future Reds with a 6.5x55

Frank
6.5 x 55. I have seen this caliber in use and it brings them down with no problem. You have put 2 calibers for choice however, in which case, i will go for the .308, i have also seen this caliber do its stuff too. Frank. Hunter
.308 its a lot more common then the old English .303. You have heaps of choice with the .308 for ammunition and guns
il cacciatore
I'm open to all suggestions but I wont be applying for one until next year.
Frank
My next rifle, please god , will be a 6.5 x 55.
dunganick
6.5 would be my choice its a great round, the recoil is low for the amount of lead it fires and at the velocity it does so. It also has a good range of projectiles both type and weight. its also generally a very accurate round. my fav. round.
SPEEDY
I would use the 308win and a good 150gr pill. I have shot many Reds with the 6.5X55 and 140gr pills as well as with a 22/250rem 338win mag and a 416 Rigby once but I mostly used the Swede. I find that like anything else they drop when hit right. miffy
Why the change? I have used the 6.5x55 with excellent results
Ears
I in my experience 308 is fine for the job on reds.
henry d
6.5 x
Holland&Holland
I shoot the .308 win with good results. Use the Sako super hammerhead 9,7 g soft point 150 grs with great effort on reds up in scotland. Works also good on big wild boar.
