Thunderbird
Back at the Feast Of Hendersons the 'band of brothers' were bouncing around all kinds of ideas about another Cotswold (and beyond?) meet-up for 2012. I thought perhaps over the festive season we might throw a few ideas around on what people would like to do and whether a Spring 2012 event is feasible. From what I (rather fuzzily) remember from the evening and post-prandial discussions the following were mentioned: Camping Hog Roast A few clays Bit of plinking General eating and drinking and merrymaking Home made food/drink Bushcraft Obviously some of the more active stuff on the list would require a bit of land and an understanding farmer. Anyway this is to just brainstorm. Over to y'all.
hendersons
I would be up for almost any of it date depending as usual. I spoke to my farmer chap who has the barn and field he rents out for corporate days but he gets £600 for the day, he did say I could have a discount and get it for £500 needless to say I told him thanks but no thanks. Im sure we can come up with something if we put our heads together though. I have a pig roaster that I'm more than willing to use if it helps. Blunderbuss
Duncan, just a thought. Me and some mates and their families have an annual camping, campfire, foody/booze up bash at Conygres Campsite just outside Wotton, do you know it? It's owned by the Scouts I think. It's cheap as chips and a good spot but the facilities are a bit basic (bogs, sinks, cold water, no showers). There's a sheltered hut if it lashes down). When we've used it we've had exclusive use of it with just 8-10 families, though you could easily fit 70 or 80 big tents in there. They don't mind you having a girt big fire and there's woodland nearby to gather wood. Shooting would be tricky - no clays unless you persuaded an adjacent farmer. They might be ok with air rifles if we set up a range of sorts. There may well be much better locations, but I thought I'd throw that into the mix as a first attempt. Looking forward to it already Edit: Conygres Camping and Activity Centre, Old London Road, Wotton Under Edge. Thunderbird
I'll do a bit of research on that, thanks. I'm sure we won't get everything on our wish list anyway. TBH clays are probably the least important. I know someone said something about having a few manual traps but that would only work if we had a gurt big bit of land. Just googled (on the iPhone so not brilliant) that site and can't seem to find it. Can you PM the contact info? bakerboy
What about finding a local clayground and ask if they can put on a Flurry/Flush, it is less competitive than clays and good fun, followed by Pub meal in the evening, plus of course a few pints. You may find that a few of the Herts Boys would support you, and maybe the Suffolk tractor boys. Or what about Crayfish fest and BBQ. But having enjoyed your company almost as much as Nicks culinary skills, I would be happy to come down for a pint and a Cheese and Onion Sandwich. I look forward to seeing this progress. You may want to contact Alan at "hitsclays" he is excellent at organising flurry/flushes (mind you my wife is not so bad at the flush's at the moment) and he may know of venues we could use. Thunderbird
Last time it certainly was and whilst Nick was very much the main man everyone contributed to it, in many different ways. As I said at the beginning this thread is just for ideas so the more the merrier. Terry there are a few clay grounds round here so at the very least some fun clay shooting and pub food / drink would easily be sorted. I suspect in fact that we may actually get two of three events out of this. I'm definitely up for crayfishing, pig roast, BBQ and I know a few guys are up for camping or B&B. Let's let it develop and see where it goes.

Thunderbird
I am watching with interest, I will also bring some Piccalilli down for you. Now there's an offer! I do feel the next one should once again showcase as much home produced booze and food as possible. I have this image of us standing round out of doors with several camp-fires, peeling bits of crackling off a large spit-roast hog whilst quaffing a range of fine booze. Thunderbird
I've had quite a few PMs about this now with some decent ideas along the lines of what's posted above, and for the record any PW member wanting to make the effort to attend would be more than welcome as far as I'm concerned. I think one of the reasons the last one worked so well was precisely because everyone contributed to it. Keep the ideas coming and thanks for the interest. Let's get Christmas over with and start planning some springtime fun in the new year.

Let's get Christmas over with and start planning some springtime fun in the new year. It is a long way to drive, but if you want a good weekend away, the Norfolk flush is being held on a Saturday 10th March. £20.00 for a 4 man team, 400 bird flurry including lunch, stay over at local B and B, dinner and party night at the pub. Alan (hitclays) is such a good organiser, if we can keep him off the Guinness, there may even be something to do on Sunday morning, probably just fall out of bed and go home but you never know. The Flurry we enjoyed this weekend was fantastic, 100 clays in (90 seconds if I am correct)with a number of shooters who have never shot a flurry before, who are now addicted. Plus of course you get to meet lots of new faces.
Thunderbird
That sounds good, I shot my first flush the other day and it was fun. Sounds like a good weekend. As per your earlier suggestion Terry there are plenty of places round here we could organise something similar. Even for the dedicated riflemen we could lend out enough shotguns for everyone. I'm still keen on the pig roast - maybe though that would be better when the evenings get lighter. Let's see.

Thunderbird
My back garden at this rate! Seriously, lots of ideas e.g. camping or a spit-roast, I know how much you like both of those. Best to get the season over and done with and then make some plans I reckon. Thunderbird
OK as promised here's an update. I'm still looking into the use of Conygres Wood campsite near Wotton-Under-Edge (or a similar site somewhere in the 'wolds) and a date during April or early May. As Blunderbuss said on an earlier post it's a basic site in terms of facilities however the plus side is you can book it privately and have free rein to light campfires and collect wood etc. If I can't get us into that one I'll be open to other suggestions. For those who want to come but don't want to camp we can easily sort some local B&Bs too. They shouldn't be too busy that time of year. Nick (Hendersons) has very kindly offered us the use of his pig roaster, both for a hog roast and breakfast the day after, and has also offered some wild food foraging tutoring sessions. Nick's responsibilities at the restaurant mean that Sunday and Monday suits him best, so having sounded out a few members already I propose the following, subject to numbers: Those who want to can arrive on Saturday Saturday PM and evening / night TBA Hog roast late PM and night Sunday Go home Sunday late night :( or early Monday morning if you need to for work Nick's breakfast on Monday Stay on for a chin-wag Monday morning and head off when you want So there are a few options here, the gaps in the schedule can be filled with people's suggestions or we can simply please ourselves, it's a very nice part of the world with plenty to do. If you want you can come for the whole thing, camp or B&B Sat and Sun nights, or just pick and choose as you please. The campsite will be cheaper per person the more numbers we have, but to give you some idea two nights camping would probably end up less than a tenner each. The pig roast is also subject to numbers as we all need to contribute to that too to make sure Nick isn't out of pocket. Would be a good idea to sort a few folding tables for catering/bar purposes. A bank holiday would clearly be an obvious choice for this but people might already have commitments. I'll be open to suggestions on that. What we need at this stage please is: A PM from you if you're interested, in principle, and subject to the usual, with your name and email address As per Nick's foraging offer, any other offers of what you could bring to the party in terms of skills, food, drink etc The home made food and drink was such a hit last time that everyone I've spoken with agrees the theme must continue! Let the good times roll.
bakerboy
PM on its way, how can I refuse after the a success of the last meet up, and the hospitality shown that was shown to me, may even bring the wife, there must be some washing up to do whilst we are having a pint or two. Fisherman Mike
Gonna have a chat with one or two of my LandLords and see if I can rustle up a Woodland venue where we can collect fallen wood and perhaps have an Airgun field trial or similar... Must be somewhere I will let you know.
