rubythedog
hello, im out tomorrow on some perm i have and its holding easy 4 figure amounts of birds (on rape) speaking to the farmer he said the birds have been settled for a weak now, he stated that a few days ago he was spraying the crop and scared the birds up and they just settled in the close by woods!( of witch there also roosting in) this perm is coverd in very large woods, after a little while he said they all just droped stright back in. my question is! do i set up on the furthest away field from were i seen the birds roost/spook to? or set up on one of the closer fiels? im worried if i set up to close to the woods ill push them off all together. thank you. bunny_blaster
I dont think it will matter. Chances are you will have a few shots and that will spook them for the day anyway. Winter pigeon shooting for you!! Cheers Ben

I would set up away from the wood, depending on how the weather/ fields/birds all look. Have a good one mate.

sitsinhedges
Get there first thing and get some sport before they form into a flock and spook together. I would avoid setting up too near a roost wood if possible.

Later than that and you might as well not bother in my experience cos they'll all just clear off together.
turbo33
IMHO 10.30 is 4 hours too late if they are feeding on rape. You need to be there before it gets light and be set up with hide done, deeks out ready for them to leave the roost. It will take a bird 1o mins max to fill its crop to bursting with rape, and it will sit in the tree for the rest of the day struggling to digest it. At 10.30, it will all be over. But if you string it out, you might catch a few grabbing a quick snack before bed at about 3.30-4.30.

I reccyed at 1pm yesterday.... 1000+ birds feeding!! im now more puzzeld lol. i see other peoples posts about flocking up on the field but tbh they are all ready that way in all the trees around the fiels arrrr... there not coming from a few miles away here, there right on top of me.. *** is sporting gun going on about then.. might just stay home lmao
turbo33
I wouldn't take too much notice of Sporting Gun, it is after all journalism Same stories, same pics. The amount of times they use the the same pics is enough to tell you they are stories. It wouldn't be good reading if the two pages were of 15-20 birds But having said that, it decoys me every month Don't stay at home, give it a go, but set the alarm early Then you won't miss anything should it happen and will be the wiser for being there and learn more about decoying over rape than you can read in SG

Spot on they may be flocked in your area but i would bet they dont all leave the woods at the same time ,they will leave in small groups then when on the fields they join together to make a bigger flock .So getting there before they do you get more chance at the smaller groups may only last an hour but better than 1 shot and there off
yickdaz
personally i would set up were they want to feed regardless of the wood situation, i wouldn,t set up away from were they want to be chances are they will not be dragged across to where you are and you will end up watching birds drop in at the other end of the field Edited December 3, 2011 by yickdaz

Had 20 today like that, and no kit to carry

Peter theobald and his mates shoot a lot of pigeons and don't need to make stuff up.

I too have got excited seeing numbers in 4 figures feeding on a field. It usually doesn't return big scores at this time of year.If there is a lot of rape in the area, your chances will be reduced further. Give it a go, but i reckon you'll have far more success around next Feb/March.
