harrycatcat1
I have just been looking to see what the xmas hols and into the new year might bring as in visits to the marsh and I have just noticed that my tide table book ends at December. Does anyone use a site on the internet for tide tables as a few that I have looked at have the sunrise times within a few minutes which is ok but there is a discrepancy with the height of the tide from my Boston (dock sill 2011) tide tables, some of them are up to 0.6m different Am I missing something ? Regards Hcc edited to say Mon 12th Dec is a full 1 metre difference. :o If I have posted this in the wrong section please move. pavman
I use port of London tide predictions for London bridge and ref either a + or - times i have noted for locations it works well for me when checked with the BBC 5 day tide look ahead (when you need to look at more than 5 days ahead)

I have just rung WH smiths in Boston and they have 2012 just in and I am going to get some as none of the internet ones accord with the tide tables, I dont really think I could trust them, I have been cut off before (my mistake) and I dont want it again Thanks to everyone

ayano3
Harry, I am not sure about SLWA but Holbeach & Spalding clubs both send out new tide tables in the pre Christmas news letters. They should be with us at any time now.

Magus69
Harry please remember that tide tables are predictions and different sources will give slightly different data. There are also factors such as strong winds out at sea that can stack up a tide, or the tide flowing through a narrow or constriction which can affect the actual height of the tide for a given time and place. The important bit is the tidal range especially during springs which is the difference between predicted low water and high water, you can then gauge the approximate height of tide for a given time by using the rule of twelths, google it as I'll bore everyone to tears by explaining. You could always go really anal about tides and get yourself a good yachting almanac and learn how to interpolate tidal heights and times for any given location but that is OTT, armed with the rule of twelths you will be able to judge whether that creek you crossed will still be crossable in 2 hours time. Mike... Thanks for your reply I did have a look and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_twelfths The thing is i have a problem with the difference with the predictions on the internet and the printed local tide tables, there is sometimes ONE full metre difference which would make a difference where you went on some marshes, if that makes sense. I just want to be safe. Regards Hcc
anser2
Harry the major problem with different tide tables giving different heights of tide is the reffrence point from where they make calculations from. On my marsh one tidetable calculates from the harbour bar while the from the harbour quay a mile and a half away. You need to pick one tide table , look at your marsh tides ( in normal weather , no strong winds ) and see how high up the marsh the tide comes and compaire with the tide table. There is still discrepancies of about 0.5m of tide between the tide table book and the tinternet for today. Regards Hcc
