Saturday's night mooch

Me and my mate had a look out on a few of our permissions on Saturday night. We started off on my permission where we took it in turns to lamp and shoot from my Defender both using our hmr’s as the fields where empty so nothing in the way of our shots. We drove just 4 fields accounting for these rabbits with the closest being shot at 70 yards. All the rabbits were of good size and no more signs of mixy so that was a bonus.

On our way to my mates permission we (or should I say I) missed the turning as we were too busy talking about how ******* cold it was outside we ended up having to do a 10 mile detour with a traffic car keeping its distance behind us. After about 10 minutes you guessed it the blue lights were on. :o On getting out the Defender to see what all the fuss was about he asked the most stupid of question of the night “Your land rover looks equipped for lamping you are dressed in cammo, what have you being doing? Er lamping was my reply. :D After 20 minutes of showing permission slips license and explaining where we had been and where we were going he finished with me explaining every time you go out in North Yorkshire “YOU MUST” phone 101 and tell us, wait for it.

Where you are going

How long you will be there

What vehicle you are in

What guns you have got with you

What you will be shooting

Etc etc.

After :lol::lol: under my breath he decided to start on my mate which I wont bore you with the details as they were similar to mine.

Anyway once at my mates permission it was me doing the driving/lamping whilst he was shooting. This farm only has a problem with Hares so they were on the menu tonight. After driving a few tracks we saw 3 Hares on one field so out the Landy and off we go walking into the frozen rape. 3 shots later and the first 3 Hares were down. Once gutted we were back in the Landy to drive round the other side of the farm to check out the back fields. Another 3 Hares were spotted so off we went this time the Hares also went so unfortunately my mate had to lie on the frozen ground to take the last 2 at 140 yards (I checked on Leica range finder) as they fell the third one was off into the distance. So at the end of a very cold night we finished on 33 rabbits and 5 Hares, not a bad result. :good:

I have only rung NYP once, in god knows how many years, during the Cumbria jobbie. Was asked why I had rung them, said " better to be careful during the present circumstances". They didn't really want to know, maybe because of the above.

Was it a young/new bobbie, trying to make a point? The 101 number has just come out, I had a private number through Countryside Watch. It is NOT compulsory to inform them on your activities, but apparently, many do.

But, a question, if I may to those who do? I never have and never will, wear camo at night, just sommat warm! Why? Never seen a fox or a rabbit carry a lamp! Blend into the dark with cammo? come on!!

The traffic officer was older than me so not so young  . He was also a gamekeeper, must be a busy lad so as you can imagine he thought he knew his stuff and went through everything with a fine tooth comb. He said the 101 number is now in action and even he phones in when ever he goes out (I will never phone in until the law states otherwise) Apart from shooting Im never out in the cold hence my only warm clothes are all realtree.

Well done on the bag, :good: Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that hares were classed as game and could not be shot on Sunday's or in the hours of darkness?

Yes hares are classed as game and cant be shot on a Sunday (these were shot on a Saturday night) but they can be shot at night. :good:
