Boxing day wildfowling

Decided to have a wee walk to clear the cobwebs of 2-3 days eating and drinking and decided to try the north shore of the Tay estuary and a place I hadn`t been in ages. Tide was full on when I got there and even though there was a wild wind blowing down river towards Dundee, there were plenty of duck to be seen out on the water. They must have been getting well buffeted by the wind, yet were only too happy to be there, I also knew that if anything was to come my way I had only a small window of sky in which I could shoot and still be able to get the bird before the wind and tide whipped it off past Dundee and into the North sea.

A few passed by at range and didn`t even appear to hear my call and those that were travelling across or down wind shot past at mach3. It wasn`t too dark when I had 2 Mallard come my way and They obliged by moving from my right to straight towards me and I took the right hand bird which folded and landed 10 feet away just in the water, however it had it`s head up and when the dog got close it dived under and I had to stop her so I could get a shot at the duck when it came up.

Fortunately it came up 15yds away and I shot it and the dog got her retrieve. The next two to go over were about 50yds up and I don`t think I gave enough lead on them and they shot across wind and out of sight, then 5 mins later I had another pair go to my left at 20yds up, but I felt the dog might not pick them before they were whipped away, so I decided not to shoot.

Enjoyable evening shoot and I may just go out again in 15 mins :D

Apologies for an untidy boot
