maddog546
A friend of mine has a SxS with the name Hammond Brothers on it,the only number being a 2 on the rib and cross lever, there doesnt appear to be any other numbers on it,it has what look like damascs barrels, any ideas where or whom to get more imformation and a value on the gun from. I have trawel the net and found very little imformation, does the 2 mean its one of a pair ?if so why are there no other numbers.
mattslaptop247
is there a number on the trigger guard at all or on the barrel flats when you take them off. have a look on matchedpairs.com and see if you can find the number one gun out there Edited January 1, 2012 by mattslaptop247
mudpatten
It is almost undoubtedly one of a pair, or more unusually, a trio. Serial numbers on guns were put there for the convenience of the makers when assembling parts and for record keeping. There is/was no legal requirement to put serial numbers on guns and many good quality guns of that period from smaller volume makers were un numbered. Any numbers normally used by the maker may also have been deliberately omitted upon the request of the customer. Older guns with no serial or part numbers are not unusual. Hope this helps. Blackpowder
Certainly one of a pair, and as such it has every chance to be a top quality gun be it hammer, sidelock or boxlock. Seriel numbers date from 1893 to 1941. Records for Hammond Brothers are held by:- C.G.Cox Ltd 150 Basset Green Road, Southhampton.
Sco77w
I know this one has sold http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Shotgun/Hammond-Brothers-Sidelock-Ejector-gun-for-sale-gs22320.aspx but is it anything like it?
figgy
There is an article on page 67 of the latest issue of sporting shooter magazine showing a Hammond Bros gun in the pic. Lovely looking sxs sidelock.the article says you are far better buying a clean example of a provincial gun like this Hammond Bros than a ropey well known one if your on a budget. I would contact the magazine see if they can tell you anything or one of there experts. ATB figgy
