ttab
I need a scope mouted lamp for a .22lr which do you think is the best and why ?
Gimlet
Its not the answer you want, but for exclusive .22LR use the best option I've found is night vision. I've tried all kinds of lamps. The best to date has been the Cluson Shootalite. Good value, usable with a red filter out to .22 LR maximum range, and well made. It does have quite a lot of light spill though and to get it out to 100 yds with a filter and reduce glare off the mod I made a snood out of cardboard. You can also stretch a length off appropriate sized inner tube over the lamp to make a hood. Most people love the Cluson mounting system because it fits anything and is endlessly adjustable. I'm in two minds because its also very easy to it knock in the dark at a critical moment and send the beam miles out of line. A few weeks ago I bought a Pulsar N550 NV scope and I can see no reason why I'd ever need the lamp again on the .22. It took quite a bit of getting used to, particularly range estimation. But I've persevered and after some nagging doubts it has proved money well spent. I can shoot to 80/90 yds in total darkness and in deep dusk when its too dingy for ordinary optics but not dark enough for the lamp. Its £1100 but in the last couple of years I've spent nearly half that on lamps, bulbs, battery packs, switches etc, and I'm shooting more with it than I ever did with the lamp. It does turn the rifle into a dedicated night shooter though, and if thats no good for you you'll have to go with a lamp. Whatever you get, have a dimmer switch. peek-at
RED CREE TORCH UNIVERSAL GUN MOUNT PRESSURE SWITCH I have just received the above which I will be testing tonight but first impressions of the red light are very good. seems very bright! ( red cree emitter ) All came in at about a tenner delivered !! Got to be worth a punt.... update........This torch was very good this evening. My bag was 7 rabbits - longest shot was 80yds (headshot) I was impressed with the range of this torch which I could never get using a red filter. Dekers
Deben Tracer Mini Pro or Max Pro. They are not the most powerful, but you will never need anything more than a Max (400yard) on a .22lr. There are BRIGHTER and BIGGER and MORE EXPENSIVE scope mounted units, but you don't need them on a .22lr, and the bigger and the brighter, the more they eat batteries as well! The fact is they offer a complete package of EVERYTHING you need, check out deals, there is always an offer on them somewhere, and for just over £100 for everything you will find them hard to beat! The PRO versions come with a Dimmer!
bicykillgaz
i usually use a deben tracer max either scope mounted or switch it to handheld if my lampman is with me, i've recently got the same setup as peek-at but still not checked it out properly as i've been nipping out in the day, the intention is to use the deben handheld for spotting then the red cree for taking the shot or if i'm out on my own just stick with the cree as it saves lugging a batterypack around. you'll not go wrong with a lightforce 140 either apart from i had wiring problems with mine hence i've now got a deben. i prefere the mounts and way you adjust the lightforce but the filters are three times the price of the deben ones. both will go the job though atb gary

blackbird
For a .22LR/.17HMR take my word & have a look at a CLULITE MASTER-LITE SUPREME fantastic bit of kit, when i was first shown it at my local gun shop i thought (NO WAY RUBBISH) but they told me to take it home try it & bring it back if i did not lite it (its simply briliant) they are not cheap at £130, but the battery goes 3hrs on one charge,my other lamp is a lightforce 170 scope-mounted which will be for sale soon as the Clulite is far more sutable for a rimfire
pat g
I use a Cluson Shootalite as well. I use it on the 22lr and on the HMR. The mount is adjustable to fit any diameter of scope which i find handy as my the scope on my 22 is a 25mm tube and on the HMR the scope is a 30mm tube. Good light out to about 100yds with the red filter which i think is adequate for lamping Rabbits. I am thinking of getting possibly a lightforce 170 though mainly for use from the vehicle and Foxing ATB, Pat
