kyska
As above this time of the year what time in the morning are you in the hide for when pigeon shooting ? I've (and others it seems) had real trouble getting any success on the pigeon at the minute, this weekend we're going out before dawn to set up, hopefully the first thing the birds see is a pattern and decide to commit to it. I've historically shot in the afternoons, because of my job, and have had pretty good results.
lee-kinsman
I suppose it depends on how much knowledge you have of the pigeons, flight lines and the area. If you have an idea of flight lines or what they are feeding on then 10 mins before sunrise, if not maybe wait an hour after sunrise see if you can spot a pattern in the birds behaviour. If you know your plan of attack set your hide up first then you have somewhere to go as soon as you've finished setting up the decoys. ATB, Lee Yea thats pretty much what we're planning, there is a area of ash trees that they use, and the evidence of damage is there, so I may even drive down and set the hide up the night before. Harnser
You have to make up your mind whether or not you want to shoot the first flight or not . If you shoot the first flight then you need to be set up for first light . I now tend to shoot the second flight at about 11 am and stay out untill dark or when the birds dry up . Harnser . THE MEK
I was setup this morning for 07.30 got in the hide and watched 100's of pigeons flight out of the woods straight over my decoys and on to another field 500 yds to the south. the field i set up in had pigeons feeding there on saturday so it just goes to show its a nightmare this time of year

Failing that the next best thing is to flag or banger rope the nearby fields, this will be our tried and tested plan of attack as soon as any pigeon show round this neck of the woods SS
yickdaz
This is true for me too. Sometimes you just can't pin them down. never had a set time but would say in winter when the birds are actually on the rape that is usually in the hide for about 9am,never been an early riser, have set up at 11am and 12pm and shot 50 birds in a few hours in mid december few years ago on rape, some occations just sat it out and had birds come in steady all day up to 3.30pm on winter rape so to me there is no set time if the birds want to play ball they will
M.I.A
In all honesty im not even going to bother with decoys this time of year. I have fields that are swarming with them but as soon as you get near them there off not to be seen again This time of year roost shooting is the way forward

Country Boy
More guns out is not always the answer. When I find pigeons on any rape fields which I can't shoot I usually try and find who owns it but often how strange it can be, especially when pigeons are hammering it, the farmer will say no sorry mate I have some lads who shoot it...well where the mec are they today?? Most farmers do have someone who shoots their land. Obviously they can't be shooting there every day, nor would a farmer expect them to. I'm glad that farmers don't say yes to just anyone who asks. I'd be a bit disappointed if on some of the farms i shoot, the farmers started letting other people go. That would have a negative impact on the crop protection that i do.
