Ackley
i have a gsp dog and have tried to mate him with a beautiful bitchbut they never managed it. she is due in season again very soon. i am looking for advise but would really like an axperienced breeder to help. i am in plymouth any help appreciated cheers Iam no expert only having mated my bitch once,I found the bitch has to be ready (standing) before she will accept the dog, this is why you have to get your dates bang on or visit the dog every day around the dates, this is why most leave the bitch with the dog for a few days. if the dog is struggling getting it in you may have to give it a helping hand guiding it into the correct place

vulpicide
Sorry about the last bit I could'nt help it. First what ages are the dog and bitch have either or both been mated (succesfully) before the start of the bitches season must be watched APPROX (its in capitals as there can be a lot of variation)ten days after she comes in she may be ready to stand (accept the dog) we ussually introduce the dog about the tenth day, depending on how they react to one another if we don't get a mating we try again possibly 11th day 13th 15th. Try and have someone who has mated dogs before present as they may be able to determine by the dogs actions what the state of play is and also if you do get a tie hold the dogs to gether until they separate Do not allow the bitch to drag the dog about!. Technically you do'nt need a tie to get a succesful mating the terrier on my avatar was born from a Dam that did'nt tie and only one succesful mating, Pm me if you need any more info. Greenhunter
One of the important things is to be fairly accurate about the day the bitch came in. It's difficult to know when to try a mating if you are not sure. Generally, the first day is when the first red discharge is seen And not when the vulva starts swelling(but you probably knew that) We mate on day 11 and again on day 13. This usually works but we had one bitch conceive on day 17 so it might be good to keep trying as long as she stands for him. As has been said, don't let the bitch turn on him or drag him round. Safest is to let him stand beside her and don't worry how long it takes, 45 mins is not uncommon. Good luck! GH
MiLisCer
Is the bitch yours? There has been plenty of good advise on here already and the guide of days 11 and 13 is a really good one, but some bitches are different, I've had GWPs stand on day 5 and then not stand on day 6 - but be in pup, on the other hand we have a lab bitch who is not ready until day 19. The best way to find out is to take the bitch to the vet on or around day 7 and ask for a progesterone test, depending on your vet and how often they do them, they will either do the analyse in house or send it off - our vet will let us know in about 30 mins, it may need doing more than once to get an accurate indication, but it will really help with a first time bitch and stud dog. Ideally for a stud's first time we would generally try to use an experienced bitch, who knows the game and will not put the dog off - two first timers is never easy! It may help to have the bitch on a lead and hold her head, to stop her snapping at the dog and putting him off, plus if/when you do get a tie, it will be easier to control the bitch.. Once tied, help the dog to turn around so they are "bum to bum" - by lifting on of his front legs over the bitch's back, so they are now both on the same side, then do the same with a bag leg so that they are now facing in opposite directions - much easier if there are two of you to control a dog each. Keep them calm and stood up for the duration of the tie. Mike
Greymaster
You might try lubricating the dog with a little mild washing up liquid to aid initial penetration. Once in a tie will usually ensue, and much preferred to a slip mating. Assist the dog with the turn around by lifting his leg. Keep both dogs stationary until the tie breaks naturally. paulf2461
thank you some great advise. dont think there was a timing issue last time. she made it clear that she wasnt ready on two occasions but she then stood for him almost begging him to mate for 6 days we tried leaving them together alone , with us helping but he just could not get any penetration. on the occasions that he was close she squeeled qnd pulled away. they are both first timers and both now coming up to 41/2. certaimly no lack of effort from him or willingness from her but do0nt seem to fit ha ha . thet are a good match sise wise, he is 1/2 inch over show size and she is bag on. think we really need an experienced breeder with us
