berettaboy
Hi, I am looking for a good quality folding knife. I have a buck 110 at the moment, but find it a tad big for my liking. I don't dress anything larger than a pheasant. I was thinking about the Puma range. Has anyone else any suggestions. Thanks BB
The Sniper
Berettaboy, Buy an Oplinel. Cheap and cheerful for what you need and they hold a good edge.
red_stag88
Go to france and get a stainless one (inox), mine is about a 2- 2+1/2 inch blade, cost me 5 euros.
Hammergun
My knife of choice is the Buck 110, which I would be lost without. I agree that it is sometimes a bit heavy, but it is ideal as a general purpose knife, especially if you want to dress rabbits etc. I also use what I would describe as a "boy scout knife" which is made by Muela and has a 4" blade. The trouble with Opinel is that the blades are very hard, and so can break easily if you try to force them, such as cutting bone. For gutting and skinning they are excellent, but I invariably use the knife for lots of things during the day.
ernyha
I don,t use a particular type of knife as such but never go shooting without my Leatherman Wave multi tool on my belt. I have found a tool on it for every emergency in the field from kit repairs to hedge pruning. Believe they are over £90 here but when my son said he could get me one from the American PX while out in Bosnia for about £30 i snatched his hand off at the chance. Brilliant bit of kit and the knife is plenty good enough for my needs.
Hammergun
I have a Schrade multitlool which I find pretty useful, and I have used on rabbits. I used to have a Leatherman but reckon that the Schrade is better.
Columbus Polumbus
BB Might sound daft but if all you want it for is pheasant and other small game, my mates all use modellers scalpels which are disposable. I use a small (for me) folding knife but would seriously suggest looking at Cabela's, they have a huge selection of knives from the plain and functional to the outrageous  They are significantly cheaper too. Yorkshire Pudding
BB I always use a "stanley" knife ..cheap and very sharp . all the best yis yp
The Sniper
YP, Those Stanley knives ( or cheapie versions of the Stanley ) are ideal for gutting rabbits with, if you put one of the hooked carpet cutting blades in it.
rjimmer
I was thinking about the Puma range. Has anyone else any suggestions. You're only going to lose it one day, so why spend a lot of money. I'm carrying a CK lock knife (http://www.ck-tools.com/cutlery/pen2.html)at the moment. £5.00 from a local tool shop. The blade appears to be of fairly hard stuff. It has a rather nice internal way of locking the blade open and can easily be closed with one hand. It has a black plastic handle so I've stuck a strip of reflective tape on each side so that I can search for it with a torch if I know roughly where I have lost it. But, for a fiver, you could get another one for the cost of the petrol going back to look for it. Of course, if you want to pose, then get a Puma. http://pumaknives.com Have a look here http://www.bkcg.co.uk but you will have to be over 18 to guy one. I've just got one of these(not a folder) from http://www.attacc.com/acatalog/Knives.html http://www.knifemart.com/hubertus.htm http://www.knifemart.com Winchester do a nice little folding lock knife. I've lost mine! Get a knife that is rounded on the corners to save your pockets getting holes in them. I agree about the hardness of the Opinel, very hard but brittle. There should be plenty of kinves to look at if you visit the Gamefair!!
Pigeon Pieman
Two suggestions - first, if only for dressing game etc, why not visit a good quality kitchen shop and buy a 'proper' butcher/chef's knife? B) Or, a Normark 'Little Swede' is a great pocket knife. Approx 2 3/4" blade, very robust, great point and easy to sharpen. Also holds a great edge. Only £20-00 too! :o
