Crow Decoying This Morning

Got woken up at 0500 this morning by my phone going off and i couldnt get back to sleep so i decided i would get up, make a cuppa and get out for some crow decoying! Ive been out early before but never before 1st light, i took my time as i was only going to the fields out the back of my house. Got all the kit loaded into the car by about 0630 and set off, as i drove onto the farm i unsliped my shotgun and got the window down, no more than 200 yards a rabbit bolts from my left to right and stopped just perfect for me to get a shot off out the window, he stopped around 30 yards and fell to a clean shot of 30g No6! I had hopped to bag a rabbit this morning so i could use it with the decoys as i have read on here it works so i thought i would give it a go!

Got unloaded and set up in the hide by 0700, i had paunched the rabbit and placed some decoys around it i had 8 full bodied flocked decoys and 4 matt blacked pigeon shells on spring sticks. Some quite strong winds this morning so i set my hide up in a ditch with the wind coming from behind me blocked by the bushes.

No sooner had i sat down and loaded my gun 2 jackdaws flew in fast and low from my right skimming the ditch i was in, i jumped up and had my first left and right of the day! Good start to the morning. all was fairly quiet after that for around 20 mins, so i got out my acme crow caller and put it too work, a few minutes later i had more crows circling my decoys than i knew what to do with so i stayed perfectly still and waited for them to come in closer, a single rook landed with my decoys so i got up (usually as soon as you move there off, but not this fella) it just stayed there walking about, so i shouted "oi" it looked at me and got up, i missed with all 3 shots :lol:

For the next hour i had some good sport, plenty of shooting im but sure someone switched my carts with blanks  i certainly could of trippled my bag should i have been on form, in my defence the sun was straight infront of me and there was some good cloud cover but it would always break out just as the birds where coming in and it was very windy  (thats my excuse anyway)

Had some cracking shots mind, i had my second double toward the end of my morning. 2 jackdaws came in directly from the sun so i only saw them once they were over my decoys i jumped up and shot the left first followed by the right, the one on the right folded nicely but the lefty swooped straight up done a circle and just dropped stone dead.

During the mad hour there was a huge flock of pigeons passing about 200 yards to my left, a few broke off and come my way i managed to drop one, so a nice little bonus.

I had finished by 0910 and the tally was as follows 13 crows/rooks/jackdaws, 1 pigeon and 1 rabbit (2 rooks are not pictured as they were impossible to get to)

Considering i have had such bad luck whilst decoying of late it was nice to actually get some decent shooting in. As ive said i could of easily trippled my bag if i performed a bit better. I used just over 50 carts this morning  but we all have days like that and i enjoyed every minute of it
