bennyblanco
Whilst out lamping with the HMR and few weeks ago I thought I would use an old box of Hornady 17gr I that has been kicking about for a few years -2006 I think, it never grouped so was left in the cabinet. I got a tremendous bang and a face full of powder and ejected this. The barrel was clear and so I went back to the Remingtons and the gun was fine after a couple of clearing shots, I don't know if it was because of age of just a dud. The rest of the box are going in the river, christ knows what would have happened if it was a centre fire case that let go
la bala
would you call that a fail or an advisory.
cockercas
would you call that a fail or an advisory. haha i read that to. it wouldn't of been any different in cf so long as there was enough pressure to force the bullet out. blackbird
Get in touch with the importers of Hornaday regardless of the age of the ammo this is a safety issue & never should have happened

Dekers
Never seen that before, with all due respect is the chamber/bolt seriously clean and was the bolt hard closed? I'm trying to figure out how that could split in that fashion, and bad fitting/seating comes to mind. Not good just the same, many other options could cause this as well! Floating Chamber
Could it be 'laminated' brass?

The bolt had lots of powder and **** on after but it is usually fairly clean, the anschutz wont fire if the bolt is lifted even a touch. I have put another 40 odd rounds through since without issue so if it was bad seating I would have thought that I would get more issues. Could it be 'laminated' brass? I don't know what that is :look:
hyflier
Years ago at my old rifle club, we had some dated .22 ammo handed to us, each round blew the primer cap off with a loud crack, a flash and an escape of burning powder. Needless to say we pulled the heads and threw 'em. I have no idea of the make or why but must assume a corrosive primer  Looking again at your picture, it reminds me somewhere in the old memory banks about the production of the .17HMR round. Did they not have problems with the pressures, and wasn't the HMR case originally unable to cope with the pressure? I have an idea the case thickness particularly around the primer had to be increased  Edited February 28, 2012 by hyflier

I've seen this in steel plate when it has been gas cut! Sparks everywhere! Edited February 28, 2012 by Floating Chamber
