Frank
Ok folks, another Poll When ferreting, which do you use the most and prefer? Long nets or purse nets? Please leave a reason when you vote, thanks. Frank.
Slipster
Long nets the most because i could never carry enough purse nets to cover all the bolt holes Also a lot of holes under shrubs that you cannot get to. Slipster I suppose it really depends on the lay of the land

Cranfield
Most people find it easier to set and use purse nets and I believe they are more effective on most warrens. Although I haven't used a long net for some time, I use to use it mainly on open rough scrubby land, where the rabbits laid up, but there were no actual burrows. We would set the net and then move through the scrub with dogs, driving the rabbits towards their earths and the net. I have heard people use a long net on very large warrens, but when we tried it on one (over 100 holes) where we didn't have enough purse nets, it was not effective, as the rabbits just ran from one hole to another and rarely left the warren. Frank
Intersting Cranfeild. I have seen this happen before on very large deep sandy warrens, run from hole to hole. Looks like purse nets are a favorite so far. But, i think i will get 1 long net to start with along with purse nets. Thanks, Frank.
johnskevena
I use a combination of short nets, longnets and pursenets cause of the terrain i ferret and they allow me to cover the warren as good as i can

henry d
99% purse but have used a short net whilst shooting bolting rabbits along hedges, these were set to stop any missed or pricked rabbits reaching the next burrow.

lurcherboy
Frank, the longnet really comes into it's own after the sun has gone down. It cannot be beaten, although a gate net comes close, mind you I don't expect you to be out a night LB

eddie willo
purse nets could not be botherd with the hassle of setting a long net also pursenets are quicker for when moving from warren to warren saves the bother of having to set and then unset a long net! eddie
Frank
Cheers eddie Frank.
Natures_son
I use both so havnt actually voted. Ive used both traditional longnetting methods and the quickset method i personally prefer the quickset and got on very well with the one i made. Though it certainly is a great feeling when a rabbit hits a perfectly set pursenet.

digger
purse nets as the hedges we ferret are open at the bottom so its easy to net the holes.we usually have two guys working the ferrets and doing the nets plus one gun either side of the hedge.we find that once the ferrrets are back in the box it means two can move onto the next warren whilst the others deal with the rabbits and nets and the forward crew start netting the next set of holes. the landowner usually comes with us and he really hates losing/missing a rabbit, there are more rabbits on his farm than i have ever seen elsewhere and its a year round battle to keep on top of them let alone make a dent in their numbers. digger
as a foot note the guns have to be the most trustworthy people you know, shooting ferreted rabbits is an art ( which i have yet to master ! ) but the paramaters have to be set early doors.we have a "count to three" rule, spot the bunny=count to three then shoot.if its in the next warren you may have a dig. id rather that than anything approaching a close call wether it be mate, dog or ferret. if you decide to shoot i defy you not to get a rush when you enter the ferrets on a frosty morning and the thumps resonate through the ground and a streaking blur of grey high tails it.
