Axe
Having only ever tried different brands of 17gr V-Max I thought i'd ask what most people like to use as thier preferred type of round in the good old .17HMR. Please give a reason for your vote. Cheers n beers.
miffy
TRIED ALL THE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF AMMO THAT I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND THE .17G VMAX WORK BEST FOR ME
AndyCM
for them pesky wabbits you can't beat the .17 v-max (the S&B version for me now on price & performance) If I am to use on fox (I try to use the .243 as 1st choice but not always possible) then I prefer the .17 TNT's for more penetration, and at a limited range. I have some 20g hollow points to try out, so for the moment they remain a for me (can't see the point of FMJ for this calibre) Cheers AndyCM
al4x
Not quite as simple a vote as it might be. I voted the 17 Vmax but I have used 20 grain. The Vmax's are ideal on small vermin and rabbits up to foxes. But do a lot of damage which is pretty much the point of them. The 20 however does far less flesh damage and penetrates further hence it being recommended for bigger stuff. So yes I like the 17 but the 20 probably has a good place on stuff you are going to eat and bigger animals
markbivvy
TRIED ALL THE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF AMMO THAT I COULD GET MY HANDS ON AND THE .17G VMAX WORK BEST FOR ME all the above for me. tried a few times to get on with the 20 grn stuff but it is not as at killing anything i have shot it at, i have had it pass straight through rabbits and foxes, granted they did not go far. but i would rather they dropped on the spot than crawl off and die under a bush.and with all but the 17grns i have had bouncers.i have put thousands of 17 stuff down the barrel but i have a few odd boxes of partly used other gear that will end up scrapped. Axe
I keep meaning to try some 20gr HP's but never seem to get around to it. The V-Max works a treat for me but the latest batch of Remmingtons don't seem to be opening up as much. What with all the long grass about, ive decided to put the .22LR barrel back on for a bit. This will certainly show me how lazy I have got.
al4x
Bet it doesn't stay on long, you wait as soon as it goes on you'll have a fox won't come close than 75 yards and you'll wish you had the 17 on.
Axe
You know it. It'll be good to get rid of some of these rounds i've had sitting around for a while. More over, I have some sensitive shoots that need cntrolling at the moment. But, once they're done.
jonno 357
Don't use the 17 vmax much. I have been using the 20g HP XTP. These also do a hell of a lot of damage to the rabbits. A couple of the rabbits I shot t'other week had extensive rib cage damage Jonno

Axe
17 grn TNT HP G.M. Any particular reason Graham?
Graham M
Been using the 17grn CCI TNT for a while now, and they seem to hit much harder than the ballistic tipped Hornady. I have been using them on foxes at ranges of @ 50-60yds with a boiler-room shot, and have found that they will drop a fox due to better penetration, whereas the Hornady ballistic’s seem to blow up too fast causing more wounding. The 17grn TNTs will also drop a 120yd fox with a head shot, whilst I would be loath to take the same shot with the 17grn B/T. All-in-all I feel that the TNTs offer better penetration and as a result seem to hit that much harder. This is just my own conclusion and it may be that I am being mislead by the fact that I have had a few really good shots, but it does seem to be a better round as far as I am concerned. Would like to hear of any accounts of other types of .17grn-ers from the lads on here, but please keep it to those of you who have actually used this round. G.M. crieffy
I only ever use 17gr V-Max stuff now. Have tried Remington, Federal and Hornady and really can't see any difference between them. I tried the 20gr CCI Gamepoints but found it passed straight through many rabbits with little expansion. I also found it prone to ricochets as well, where the V-Max very rarely has any. What with all the long grass about, ive decided to put the .22LR barrel back on for a bit. This will certainly show me how lazy I have got. After using the HMR constantly for a few months I was shocked at how bad my .22lr shooting had become . All back to normal now, but several bunnies must have been laughing at me 'til I got my head back into .22 rimmie mode. John

John Went out last night withthe .22LR back on, don't think its gonna stay there too long. I did enjoy having an ultra quiet round, but it felt almost airgun like in comparison to the .17HMR. I also noticed a few rounds going through the rabbits, one in particular, went through and richoched of towards a wood where it finally came to rest. I felt like I wasnt giving it enough respect and started to become unsure of taking shots with it. At least with the HMR you know what the round is doing and for me at least, the report maintains my respect for the round. Think i'll be sticking with it.
