Cat killing Goldfinches.

Heard a statistic from a Twitcher the other day on TV - There are around 9,000000 cats in the UK & they kill approx' 60,000000 song birds each year

Now there is a very interesting set of numbers. We get a lot of birders visiting Norfolk and we get reports of rarities "taken by domestic cat". Sickening is it.

Trouble is the RSPB has a load of members that keep pussy. The majority of which are ignorant as they have no hint nor clue about their feline inmates, any why they prefer fresh hawfinch to off the shelf tinned kiti-krap. Cat owners should be licensed, bloody things. :D

There is not much to get mate. My dog would happily prey on my neighbours cat. I keep my dog under control so it doesn't get chance to eat the cat.

If owners kept their cats under control instead of kicking them out to merrily kill stuff and dump all over there wouldn't be a problem.

I live on the edge of a very small village and I don't get any problems from dogs, just cats.

How exactly do you keep a cat under control? I have dogs and I keep them under control with a big fence. When they go out they are under control as they are trained and also possibly leashed...none of which can realistically be done to a cat.

I say again that you are exacerbating your problem by feeding the birds in the first place, you attract the birds which in turn attracts the cats. The fact is that you are unlikely to change the law to 'force' cat owners to keep them locked away from the birds so where do you think the solution lies? I understand your frustration but at the same time feel you've made a rod for your own back.

We have a cat in our workshop and to be honest i hate them but the terriers killed its mother so i felt guilty it was only a little thing when it turned up looking for food so i fed it as soon as it grows i will get rid off it on the farm up the road if it walks onto our yard it wont last 5 minutes i have two terriers and a whippet that hate cats as much as me the farm up the road doesnt have a dog

I have to say i am disgusted at some of the attitudes towards peoples pets on here, i was bought up owning cats among other pets and still keep cats now and the fact is cats eat birds, mice, frogs etc thats life, as someone said before its a lot more natural and skillful than us putting cartridges and bullets through animals, i actually admire how a cat will stalk and catch another creature and if it manages to catch its prey i believe it deserves its dinner.

Its totally silly saying dogs have to be trained so cats should to, a cat wont do anywhere near as much harm to a child that a untrained dog could.

Idiots talking about shooting or hurting cats really make me wonder if they are sensible enough to be trusted with firearms or even a airgun

So if an animal damages or affects your property you don't consider it vermin?

It's not other peoples pets we hate, it's that they are let out to soil OUR private properties - that we choose to invest in without having ***** and stinky smells as part of the deal. My preferred choice of dealing with cats is to move them somewhere they can leave their waste as much as they like, and it won't be anywhere near my place. I don't hate their other types of pet either.

I guess you don't shoot rabbits because some people have them as pets, pigeons are pets too for some people - Geese and even rats and other foul. How come you are a shooter of fluffy or furry quarry dude? One mans pet is often another mans vermin.

I quite like cats but I don't want one. Why? Because I don't want cat **** on my garden and I don't want fledgling birds killed by them; both of which we get every year.

There's nothing much wrong with cats, or any pets. It's the attitude of the owners that perplexes me. I can't imagine any of them ever saying, "let's get a cat and while we are choosing, we had better let the neighbours know we are expecting to turn their garden in to a toilet". 'And if you enjoy watching the birds nest in your garden we are going to introduce a predator just for our own amusement". Of course, you could put a large bell on the cat to give the birds a fighting chance or you could pay for any deterrent the neighbour might need to keep your cat out, but no, that would be too much consideration for others. Or you could make amends by compensating for the imposition, but somehow I doubt any cat owner would think of that.

So if you want a cat, that's fine by me - Just take responsibility for it as I don't want to share it.

I myself have to clear my gravel flower bed of cat droppings every weekend with a glove and bin bag, i know it is the other cats in the street as mine are indoor cats but do i moan and complain about it no because such is life and what good would it do because how would anyone stop it?, should we perhaps talk about the mess a few lazy dog owners leave on the footpaths or even better when they let there dog just lift its leg and pee wherever it feels like it such as up a roadside house or a random car wheel or even a telegraph pole so it can run across the path, Every pet whether cat or dog does something to annoy someone thats life there's no point complaining about it, be grateful for the free manure for the flowers  .

No i am happy to shoot Rabbits and pigeons to eat as i see cats and dogs and other PETS differently,i have kept pet rabbits myself and wouldnt have eaten those, i guess the difference between the "one mans pet is another mans vermin" quote with me is i prefer to only shoot legally and unless i'm very much mistaken cats are not on the general license and i dont think the police or anti's would really like to hear of people spraying peoples pet rabbits and pigeons up there hutches and lofts either so its not really the same thing in my eye's.

And just so people know i am a dog person as well as cat so i have nothing against either,

I've nothing against people debating what annoys them but when it comes to silly talk about would they want to do to the animals such as causing harm i think its going to far.
