Farmer-of-the-Futre
Hey all. I will be 17 at the end of next feb/early march (im a leapling!) And thought a smallish 4x4 would be ideal as i live and work (when i can) on the farm. I abvisously shoot too! I love the jimnys and also, being a 1.3 and not your typical 'boy racer' set of wheels the insurance should be cheaper. On auto trader the insurance esimation was between £1500 and £1550. Is this about right or is they're estimator way out? if its correct then im a happy lad. Ive just got to find a jimmny! Any other tips/ recomendations or accessary suggestions will be greatly accepted. Cheers, Matt

bedwards1966
Impossible to answer really, it varies greatly between different people in different areas. It's worth a few minutes on comparison sites to give you an idea and sometimes find an OK deal.
chrispti
Go on a comparison site, enter your details to get some quotes, that will give you a good idea.

cant hit rabbits 123
£1500?!?! Thats incredibly cheap for 17! I've never had an accident or any incident to affect the cost of my insurance, and one company quoted me nearly £5000 for a 1 litre car at 18! Its stupid, as the companies often ignore everything but your age, gender and record at this stage in your driving life.

Farmer-of-the-Futre
Hmm, cant seem to get many quotes as you have to be 17. Any other opinions?
humperdingle
Sorry bud, can't help much with a comparison, but the Jimny maybe isn't as cheap as you'd expect. Thirsty on petrol too (32mpg or so). I think my actual premium (i'm 40, no points, full no claims, etc) is around £220 fully comp. I'll be selling mine at some point this year i reckon. Thanks for your input. Just out of interest, do you know what you will be swapping it for? and is there a reason for selling it besides the fuel consumption and general age etc? bedwards1966
Hmm, cant seem to get many quotes as you have to be 17. Any other opinions? Yes, just enter your DOB to say you're 17 - it'll give you an idea of what it will cost when you turn 17! You aren't actually buying the quotes you'll be getting so I wouldn't worry about declaring something that's false. It'll give you a good idea - and don't be surprised if it is around the 5000 mark either. It can make a big difference btw if you add an older driver to the policy (mum or dad), as adding them can reduce the risk as they figure it means you'll be driving it less. It's worth a go. Insurance for young drivers is absolutely horrible. Edited April 12, 2012 by bedwards1966

Just out of interest, do you know what you will be swapping it for? and is there a reason for selling it besides the fuel consumption and general age etc? I'll be swapping it for a little 1 litre 65mpg jobbie  That's the only reason apart from the fact I don't really use it offroad. Seems silly to use so much petrol when I don't have to. Don't let that put you off getting one... Great wee cars and very capable.
Farmer-of-the-Futre
Well, i just said i was 17 and filled in all my details on the admirals site and when i had finally finished it said they are experiencing technical issues! Ill ring up the NFU soon and see if they can give me a rough estimation. Thanks for the help. Any other info about these little trucks? I tried NFU and they said they would insure me as a young driver unless I had existing business with them. Still may be worth a try at your local branch though. humperdingle
Any other info about these little trucks? Probably better waiting until you're closer to buying, mate. They're generally reliable... Galvanised bodies, so you rarely see a rusty one. Known issues would be: 'Death wobble', due to worn king pin bearings - About £200 to sort. This shows itself usually at a specific speed range between 40-50mph. If it's mild, it's not an issue, but well-worn bearings can cause major shakes. Not a huge problem to fix, though. Two of the Jimnys I looked at had the orange engine light illuminated. They tend to suffer from poor ABS, Lambda sensors, etc... Again, a cheap and easy fix. Not much else really, but try to get a post 2002 model with timing chain as opposed to cam belt. Mine has a separate low box gear shift as opposed to button-press 4x4. I've heard of problems with the button version, but seems rare.

ferguson_tom
To be honest with you if your looking for insurance next year I wouldn't waste my time on comparison sites until closer to the time as insurance companies seem to do completely different things depending on what way the wind is blowing especially for young drivers. Since I started driving 5 years ago at 17 i have never renewed my policy with the same company. Aviva went through a stage 2 or 3 years ago where they were cheaper than anyone for me by about 800-900 quid for the year, then my renewal come through at £1500 more than what i paid the previous year with them. Definitely put your parents on your policy they bring it down loads, I am 22 and my mum, dad and father in law are all named drivers on my policy. I didnt find NFU cheap either, to get a quote i got round there existing policy thing by insuring my vintage tractor with them. Farmer-of-the-Futre
I havnt personally had much to do with the NFU but i think the other cars in our household are insured with them and i guess the farm equipment is too. pimpkiller
go on Directline website, stick in your details then at the end you can click a button to amend bits and bobs like adding a year of age, different car or an extra year of NCD, it saves alot of time from having to do multiple quotes. Ive never found any of the others cheaper than directline.
